Black screen after login, Win 7 64-bit, caused by Windows Event Log?
I'm not sure when this started, but I've been getting a black screen with a moveable mouse-cursor after login for a week or so. If you hit CRTL-ALT-DELETE, the system responds. If you wait, the desktop would show up in 15 to 20 seconds. BTW, I've looked through this already. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/5b94b775-992e-4f48-b3ff-c89b3cf45e82 I thought it might be Aero or my video driver, but as I enabled and disabled services, it was disabling "Windows Event Log" that seemed to resolve the problem. I still see a black screen, but only for a second or two. It seems like the Windows Event Log is vital service running on the system, and that it's an unlikely cause for this problem. Does anyone have any additional troubleshooting tips or a KB article that might help? System specs: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, fresh install i7-2600K 16 GB RAM RAID 5, using Intel onboard RAID Gigabyte mobo Thank you, James

Hi James, According to your description, I suggest to login with Safe Mode to see if the same issue occurs. If the issue not occurs in Safe Mode, I suggest to unplug all necessary hardware, then update the driver for VGA card, also update the BISO to the latest version. Also remove third party programs. If this issue persists in Safe Mode, you can perform a startup repair in WinRE: 1) Restart PC 2) Press “F8” and select “Repair Your computer” 3) Startup Repair Hope that helps. 1) The problem does not occur when the system is started in Safe Mode. 2) When I ran the Repair Your Computer tool, no changes were made. 3) When I start the system in low video mode, the problem occurs. 4) When I turn off Windows Event Log, the problem stops. Because of #4, I went through the Event Log to see if I could find a problem. It showed a iSCSI Initiator time out. 5) Using msconfig, I deselected the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service. Steps #4 and #5 resolve the problem. I have a networked bluray drive connected through the iSCSI Initiator. It would be really nice to have this working, but not have the delay. Is there some way I can offset this service to start after boot-up? Thank you, James

What if you remove the networked bluray drive? Also you can set the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service as disable when boot-up: Open Services---select Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service, set the service startup type to “Disable” or “Manual” Regards, Leo Huang Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I have noticed a lot of issues with iSCSI with both Windows and Linux which is telling me there is a real problem with the technology. Not sure but its a complex protocol. It competes with other solutions such as NFS and LUSTRE. My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. I have set the iSCSI initiator to Manual. This allows the quicker start after log-in. However, it would still be nice to have this service working, as I use the bluray drive occassionally to load/backup files. I tried to create a batch file to start the service, but running NET START MSiSCSI provides the following error message: System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. James
