I'm experiencing the same problem as well, installation went fine and everything was working well. I then restarted the computer and now it won't go into windows anymore, after the windows sign it just goes into a black blank screen.

I have an Alienware Aurora A-3 computer with Win 7 64-bit.  I attempted to install 3 times Win 8 64-bit.  Each time the installation is complete, the computer reboots twice, then hangs with a black screen with 4 white squares in the middle.  The first 2 times I spent 45 minutes waiting to see if anything would happen.  The third time I waited overnight (around 5 hours).  Each time I had to do a cold reboot as nothing worked to get past the black screen, then it reverts back to the original windows version.  I've never had this much trouble migrating from current to new windows versions.  HELP!  Need an answer ASAP.

My take on it is that it's a video card driver issue.

Theoretically, the following steps might work for you:

  •  force the Windows 8 PC to get into Safe Mode

(see http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/ )

(or power on the PC then find a way to abruptly power it down like pulling the power cable -- yeah I know it's b@d@$$)

  • once in Safe Mode, open the Device Manager and uninstall the video card drivers then restart the PC
  • since it does not have any drivers installed, the OS will install a generic video card driver that would let you get to the Login Screen or Start Screen
  • from there it should be obvious already that you should acquire a Windows 8-compatible driver for your video card

I have the same problem on Sony VAIO, but if I go into safe mode, it says that Windows 8 was not installed correctly, and goes back to Windows 7 after uninstalling the new OS. Any suggestions? What if I uninstall the video driver before installing Windows 8?

Thanks!

NVIDIA issued an updated Win-8 compatible driver for my GeForce 580XT card (306.97) a few days ago.  Even after installing the drivers for that, two more times I struck out; Windows 8 installs, reboots twice, then hangs at the same spot (4 white squares and black screen, no mouse cursor, even).

Now on my 8th attempt to install Windows ****, er, 8.  I have tried all 3 options (install w/everything, install w/just personal files, clean install). Tried the F8/Shift + F8. Didn't work at all.  Where the **** is Microsoft on this?  Was there quality assurance department out smokin' doobies when it came time to convert from windows 7 to windows 8 and not have the BSOD

Hi Neo R,

1. Please update your <label>graphics card driver and re-install windows 8. </label>

2. Please un-plug any outside devices.

3. If the issue persists, please format your system disk (Note: all the data will lost after the format) and re-install windows 8 again.

Very simple solution for anyone with a Dell: Plug it into an external monitor or tv (I connected mine through hdmi to my tv) and u will be able to see what is supposed to be showing on your computer screen. Once you've finished setting up windows 8, go to Dell's website and download the latest bios driver. Make sure your power cable is plugged in then install the driver (it will prompt u to do so anyway). When this is done it might not boot up straight away (mine just kept switching off when trying to boot). I unplugged mine and came back to it later, it then booted up fine, screen was on, no more problems :)

Any of you guys tried changing the resolution of your monitors?

I tried changing the resolution but it didn't make a difference.  The Dell laptop screen was the problem.  It needed to be updated.

Download the DELL BIOS update from Dell.com.  Then install Windows 8.

on the model that I was upgrading (N5050 B890) the problem seems to be caused by display issue, which can be resolved by upgrading the BIOS (from Dell Website)

This problem is solved...

I guess the problem is concerned with the display module controller in the BIOS which is having a slight compatibility issue with windows 8.

This issue is solved by updating the BIOS of your Laptop/PC to the latest version. You can download the latest BIOS from the website of the Laptop company/Motherboard Company.

But for updating the BIOS, you have to start your computer/Laptop for at least one time in Normal Mode. So here are the steps to do so...

1) Boot the Laptop/PC.

2) After the boot screen (The Circle Animation & Windows 8 logo), you will be presented by the lovely & awesome blank screen.

3) Wait for 1 minute so that drivers load into the memory.

4) Press the Power button of your laptop/PC for only a moment (Just Press and release it quickly. Don't hold. We don't want to shut down).

5) This will force the laptop/PC to go into Sleep mode.

6) When the laptop/PC goes in sleep, the laptop fan & other sounds will stop.

7) After 4-5 seconds, press the power button again & release it quickly.

8) Voilllaa!!! The laptop/PC starts & you are presented with the lock screen. Now..... Login! What are you waiting for! :P

This is not the permanent solution. It just lets you start you Laptop/PC.

After updating the BIOS, I strongly suggest that you must download the latest graphics driver for your Computer/Laptop to avoid any further issues.
