Bitlocker preventing normal shut down
When I turn on bitlocker the system does not shut down properly as described in KB 975496; but when I attempt to install the hotfix I receive the message “ the update is not applicable to your system” and the install exits. The system has windows 7 Enterprise SP1 installed and is fully patched.

KB975496 requires a restart after applying it. Try turning off bitlocker, apply it, restart, turn on bitlocker and test the shutdown. One would think that it would be part of SP1, but who knows? Also, did you create the appropriate sized partitions on the drive prior to the installation for Bitlocker to be happy? Are you using TPM or a usb flash drive ? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee706536(WS.10).aspx

I turned off bit licker and allowed the drive to decrypt, rebooted then tried to install the hot fix. I still received the error “the update is not applicable to your system” i did not create a new partition for bit locker, we are storing the key in active directory and bit locker did not ask to create a new partition. We are using the TPM for bitlocker.

Hi, This KB has been included in SP1 package. So when you install it the error message “the update is not applicable to your system” will pop-up. You can check KB975496 is installed on your PC or not: · Click Start · Input “Windows Update” in Search box and press enter · Click “View update history” Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. I thought the update was included in SP1, and am not overly surprised to be told the patch is not applicable. My problem is I am still having the problem the patch was supposed to fix; where the hardware does not power down once bitlocker is enabled. KB975496 is not installed.

This issue should be fixed in Windows 7 SP1, sometimes the issue may related with BIOS of your PC. You can try to update BIOS to the latest version for test. In addition, you can check the system version by using command: slmgr.vbs –dlv If the issue persists, try to reinstall Windows 7 SP1 package: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/learn-how-to-install-windows-7-service-pack-1-sp1 Hope that helps. I have SP1 installed and I am still having the issue. I have updated the bios to the most current version. I have also attempted to remove SP1 and install the patch. I was unable to install the patch and reinstalling SP1 did not correct the issue.

Hi, Try to remove or disable all unnecessary hardware, and set BIOS to boot only form internal HD. Then logon with Clean Boot , and shut down again to see if the same issue occurs. I disabled the unneeded hardware, set the boot to only HD, performed a clean boot and then enabled bitlocker. I then attempted to shutdown normally. The OS turns off but the hardware still does not.

Please add the registry key to check if the issue persists. (For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. ) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Storage Create a DWORD Value, name SATAHotplugPolicyOverride, set 1 in Value Data. Restart the computer to check if it works. Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Part of the process for activating bitlocker included upgrading the BIOS to the latest version. In the case of the Dell E5510 this was version 10. When the BIOS was left at version 6 the error did not occur. Systems already updated to version 10 were downgraded to version 6 and bitlocker was successfully activated.

Has a fix been created for this problem yet? I have the same issue running W7 Ultimate on a TPM enabled Dell Latitude XT2. OS shuts down but not hardware. Manual shutdown required.

I had the same problem and may have just solved it. When I updated my bios by adding an administrative password then rebooted bitlocker wanted the key code or reboot and suspend bitlocker. I cancelled the feature to enter the key code and it rebooted normally. I then suspended bitlocker from manage bitlocker wizard, rebooted so it could upgrade it's bios settings. It shutdown normally like before I installed bitlocker. I then rebooted and attempted to resume bitlocker but it did not toggle back to suspend bitlocker setting. I selected Resume bitlocker anyway and rebooted. Shut down took a long time but it did finally reboot without manually shutting down. I then resumed bitlocker again and the display toggled to suspend. I rebooted and it shut down quicker. It has worked since. I hope this helps. Good luck. finrep
