Bitlocker To Go - not totally secure?
Hi, I wonder if there are any Windows 7 Bitlocker To Go experts out there? I've just had a thought. I understand that Windows 7 OS caches thumbnails to X:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer.So would it not be right in saying that Bitloocker is not totally secure? ie could thumbnails be recovered from the Windows 7 thumbnail cache even if the files from which the thumbnails were generated originally existed on a bitlocker to go encrypted usb drive or external drive?

The thumbnail cache cannot be on X: as there is no such drive by default in Windows 7. My guess is that the cache is in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ExplorerIf that is the case, it is not really a security breach as this is part of thelocal user profile, which is only accessible for the user that accessed the encrypted drive. Although I must agree this area of the profile is not encrypted.Did you check if the thumbnails from encrypted disks are cached in this location? I would not be surprised if thumbnails on encrypted disks are not cached at all.Ray

Thanks for the response. Just to explain, by drive X: I was referring to whatever drive windows is installed on so yes, c: would be the most likely. I must admit that I would'nt be surprised if there is some form of security in place to encrypt or disable thumbnails generated from files on a bitlocker encrypted usb drive given how secure the bitlocker encryption system is meant to be. Allowing thumbnails to be generated from encrypted files in an unencrpted state on the drive c: would seem to me to be one ____ of an oversight :-) As for checking if this is the case I am unaware of how to do this as Idon't understandhow to view the thumbnail filesfrom the windows 7/vistathumbnails folder. Any suggestions?
