Bitlocker - How to replace HD, multiple HDs and Imaging questions
Any Bitlocker experts out there? I have several BL questions in different scenarios. Computer is standalone non-domain joined with a TPM chip. Scenario #1 - Got a laptop with Windows 7 with a BL encrypted HD. What’s the best way to swap out a smaller drive with a larger one? Scenario #2 – Anyone tried disk imaging (Ghost) software on a BL drive? I’m thinking if you boot with Imaging software the OS partition (C:) is encrypted so the resulting image file is encrypted. If the imaging software is run from within the OS or if P2V software is used within the OS the resulting image file or VHD would be unencrypted. What about the System Reserved partition? The System Reserved partition is not encrypted so they should be able to be imaged. In thinking about this, is there anything unique about System Reserved partition? Or are all System Reserved partition identical? I’m thinking if the computer did not have a TPM chip the drive could be imaged (System Reserved partition and OS partition) and restored to a similar computer without issue. Since there is NO TPM chip all that would be needed to unlock the drive is the key. Scenario #3 – Have a laptop with 2 HD. One is an internal drive; the other drive is in drive tray replacing the DVD. Internal HD has Win 7 the other Server 2008R2. The way I select with drive to boot from is by is hitting F12 and selecting from the BIOS screen. What’s nice about this arrangement is files can be stored on either drive and is accessible by either OS. If BL were enabled under both OSs I would think the files would still be available even though these are two separate BL installations. Is this correct?

#1 what are the smaller drive? are they partitions or physcal disks? #2 see this post http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/6b34b4da-b1e2-4038-8d6d-192f973cadea. JimGay gives some answers. #3 I don't think that will work well because they use different key to BL.

Scenario #1 What do you mean "swap out a smaller drive with a large one" Do you mean re-partition the hard drive on the laptop? If so, it will format the drive firstly. If a PC that is protected by BitLocker is formatted, then format also specifically destroys the key data --- providing a much more secure data deletion method. Scenario #2 We're not familiar with the Ghost, however, according to this discussion: http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/Ghost15-Doesn-t-really-seem-to-support-Win7-Bitlocker-in-my/td-p/194399, ghost does not support the encrypted drives, please check the user guide page 63. The system reserved partition contains the boot files. Refer to this Microsoft Reserved Partition. Actually, you can also save the BitLocker keys to a USB flash drive. It's an option that is only available if your system administrator has configured the BitLocker Group Policy settings to allow the use of a startup key when a TPM is not available. Scenario #3 To set up a dual boot with BitLocker protection is possible. Please refer to this: Can I dual boot Windows 7 and Windows Vista with BitLocker-protected operating system drives? In addtion, I want to share some documents about BitLocker with you, they could give you more information.
