BitLocker Recovery Tool for Windows 7?
I accidentally unplugged my external hard drive while it was decrypting, and I cannot access the drive at all anymore. I cannot access the drive at all anymore. Whenever I go to the BitLocker settings in the control panel, the screen does not respond until I unplug my external hard drive. I see that there is a recovery tool for BitLocker for Vista, but it will not work for Windows 7. Is there anyway to get my external hard drive working again? Is there a recovery tool available for Windows 7? I would REALLY like to get my info off of that hard drive. Please help! Thanks.

No, the situation is not solved. I am unable to use the recovery tool that is provided my Microsoft. It seems as if the tool is specific to Vista only. I would really like to get the data off of that drive...or even better, remove the encryption on the drive. Thanks.

I think we need to wait for such recovery tool to be released for Windows® 7. You shall send Microsoft feedback for Windows® 7, and there you can add that thing about a recovery tool. I started decryption on my External Disk and as it takes much time to complete, I paused it (its a process recommendation by BitLocker itself and resumes automatically once you plugin the drive back). But when I plugged in next time, mistakenly the cable got loose and after that same problem I am facing. This disk contains some very critical data of mine and now not able to retrieve it.

I got the same problem in accessing a 1.5 tb hard drive that started the encryption but never ended it because of system hanging. I tried to use the repair tool in command prompt. Hello Claudiu A I have been experimenting with Bitlocker the last few days, due to a clients' hard disk that had the same problem: They unplugged the drive while it was encrypting and the encryption never resumed. When I enter their password for the disk to decrypt it says wrong password. (the password IS correct AND entered correctly). I had some luck with repair-bde command; I have managed to get it to go up to 31% and then it froze. But when i restarted my machine I was able to see data on the output drive. When you use this command tool, do NOT choose the -NoOutputVolume switch nor the -force switch. They wouldn't work for me either. Also, if it says that the drive is currently in use, close ALL windows and leave open just the cmd window. Then try again. Works for me the second time. Unfortunately this seems to freeze randomly. After the 10th attempt it went up to 31% and as we speak it just froze to 6%.

I'm in no possibility of trying without the -NoOutputVolume attribute because I do not have an other 1.5 tb external hard drive. Any other things that might work? I'm considering formatting the hard drive, but I'm i have no idea of how much data i can recover with a data recovery tool after the format. Especially how I have about 20 gb of pictures and short movies and thousands of documents there. Any good recovery solution that would work in the case of formatting the drive? I did try a data recovery software on that hard drive and after about 10 hours of searching and searching it told me that it went out of memory and I had to close it down. I tried it on a 3 gb laptop. The software was GetData's "Recover my files". I would really appreciate any advices I can get from you and the other people on this forum.
April 27th, 2010 10:46am

Hi Claudiu I would strongly recommend AGAINST formatting your drive. It would surprise me if a data recovery software would scavenge any file from your drive. Actually, a good DR software would recover encrypted 3.99GB files and/or raw files, but i wouldn't bet on the latter case. Most probably large encrypted files which will be of no use to you. I have tried DiskInternals Partition Recovery and it recovers files in raw format (ie. no filenames, no directory structure) in case you're interested. It costs around $120-140 from their site. My bet would be if you'd just go on and buy another 1.5TB disk and use my proposal above. I know 1.5TB disks are not cheap but i think you don't have any other way out from this. You will then keep the second 1.5TB disk as storage media (ie. you won't throw away your money). Or maybe borrow a disk from a friend or something and return it after you're done. Or sell the second drive to someone :) I don't know, i'm only trying to help here. Have you tried this with a smaller output drive? Perhaps it would work and copy data until the output drive runs out of space. I'm not sure though. In my case it DID work with a 1TB input and 1TB output drive.

I will try to leave it for a while until I get my hands on a 1.5TB hard drive. The information on that is really important to me but, at least is not urgent. So, for now I will try and leave it like that until I can find the same amount of space somewhere else. I will look into the DISKINTERNALS Partition Recovery. Please mention if you searched for the files after an encryption, after an encryption and formatting, after a simple formatting, because I did not understand the scenario you used. Thanks so much for your time. For now, I guess I will have to sit and wait a while.

Hi Claudiu The scenario i used had to do with a drive encrypted with BitLocker but encryption never finished. Therefore, when I tried to unlock the drive using the BL password, it kept saying password is incorrect. Then, ON THIS ENCRYPTED drive, I have used DiskInternals and tried to recover data. To be honest I tried several other Data Recovery Programs like File Scavenger, GetDataBack and Zero Assumption but to no avail. DiskInternals was able to recover raw data, like "JPG FOLDER", "ODS FOLDER" etc containing a few respective files. Not much of a help, but it could assist someone trying to locate a specific document, for example. In my case i had thousands of documents and tenths of thousands of mp3's which would be impossible to classify again. So I gave up this method and used the repair-bde command and luckily I had the data back. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

mosammey, I have been having similar issues, particular the formatting of the external HDD partition I was using to store my recovery key. I am in the process of trying the following command: manage-bde -off E: (at this point, as I am typing this, the volume is being decrypted) Additionally, you might also try the following command in the cmd window: manage-bde E: -unlock -<password> (you stated above that you know your password). Also, I noticed that you are attempting to recover your data after accidentally unplugging it, oops! I am not sure if the above steps will work for you as the decryption process didn't complete and since you have access to the GUI for BitLocker, I may just be giving you commands that you have already done through that interface. My problem prevented me from being able to log into my machine, but the first command above seems to be working so far (still decrypting). If you would like to check out the page on the manage-bde function, here it is: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd894351(WS.10).aspx (basically the layout of enabling, disabling, etc. of BitLocker from the command line) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd894351(WS.10).aspx#BKMK_parameters (a list of allmanage-bde parameters and command line syntax) I will keep you updated on events as they occur and respond back to this thread with further information (whether it worked or not). I guess this goes to show that keeping multiple forms of the recovery key (USB x3 or 4, printed copy, etc.) is the best practice to avoid such unwanted issues. I think I will just elect to turn off bitlocker if any of the above methods prove successful. Good luck, and I will post back in a little while with an update...
