BitLocker Error in Event Viewer
I have a Dell Studio XPS 9100 computer with Windows 7 Prof, SP1. About two days ago,a BitLocker error began to appear in the event viewer. I have not used or accessed BitLocker on my computer. The following appears in the event viewer: Event ID: 24620; Locate ID: 1033; Event Source - Microsoft Windows BitLocker Driver; Encrypted Volume Check: Volume Information on \\?\Volume ID3353cee-e448-11df- --etc. I tried to find out how to turn on and off the BitLocker program but no luck. I checked the control panel listings but did not see anything referencing BitLocker. I also checked Start/All Programs but did not find anything related to BitLocker. I even used Windows 7 Help and Support. I did find the listing to Turn On and Turn Off BitLocker, but the highlighted entries did not work when clicking on them. A check with Google, as best as I could determine, indicates that BitLocker only is evailable with Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise. I would very much appreciate any help in resolving the event viewer error problem for BitLocker. Thanks, Sam.

Hi, I assume that this event log may indicate it is failed when the computer wants to access the shared drive which is encrypted by BitLocker. Please check whether you want to assess this kind of volume on the network or an encrypted Flash drive. Juke Chou, many thanks for your reply. My computer is a stand alone computer. I have not worked with an encrypted Flash Drive, or accessed any shared drive which is encrypted, or any unencrypted shared drive. Also, I have not used any hard drive encrytion program on my computer. As I looked back in my event viewer, this error only began after the install of the Microsoft Security Updates for April 2011. Any further help would be very much appreciated, Sam.

Hi, You are correct that Bitlocker should only be active\available in the Ultimate and Enterprise versions of Windows 7. It may be easiest to perform a system restore to the point in time prior to the updates. Click Start->type system restore->and select it from the programs results. Follow the directions and select the point prior to the updates. Reboot when it completes. Then, re-run Windows update. Have you installed any applications that have an encryption utility?

Nano Warp, many thanks for your reply. The only application that I have with an encrption capability is WinZip and I have not used it. I am wondering if Microsoft Security Essentials definitions might be causing this problem?? However, I have not seen anything on Google about MSE and BitLocker. Hopefully the system restore will resolve the situation. Question: After I perform the system restore point, should I uninstall and reinstall programs that were installed before and after the date of the system restore that I will use?? For example the CCleaner Program and MS Office Word 2010 has been installed on my computer for over six months without any problems. Another example is the Malwarebyte program which I installed approximately three days after the BitLocker error began appearing. Very much appreciate any additional help, Sam.

Hi, If the applications is installed before the Restore Point, you have no need to reinstall them. Also, if you find any other problem, you can easily use the System Restore to restore back.
