Biometric scanner works for one user and doesn't work for another!

I recently upgraded my main home computer to Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I was happy to find out that my biometric scanner seemed to work (driver-wise). Took me some time to realize that finger-scan technology is now embedded and not third party, so I successfully added two of my fingerprints on my own (domain admin) user. The local network is on an SBS2011.

I had to enable biometrics login for domain users with GP.

It works fine (and faster than Win7) to log me in or even unlock my computer.

So... I assumed it will work fine with the second user of the computer, my wife. A local administrator (of the PC).

Well, the "add my fingerprint" option is there all right, but no matter what we try to scan "1 2 3 4" never light up.

Biometric scanner still looks ok in device manager and when I log off my wife or even switch user, biometric scanner beautifully reads my thumbprint and logs me in.

Checked GP even through my wife's account and is (of course) still as expected.

Any ideas???

1. This seems to be more computer model specific and vendors forum would be better target for your question. Visitors may contribute their experience with the same computer model if you provide this info.

2. Look into Security log for exact error message.

3. Give more information on the GPO settings that you are using.

4. Hope you either force the GPO or waited appropriate time for GPO to apply.

5. Unless you really need, use lowest privileges for you family users. If you use Active Directory AND GPO, then domain users are expected for login, not local ones.

Thank you Milos...

1. This is a USB thumbprint scanner and works fine hardware wise and driver wise. I think it is obvious from my description. It is detected as AuthenTec AES2501B.

2. Nothing but the usual "logon", "logoff", "special logon".

3. Computer/Admin Templates/Win Components/Biometrics. All enabled except the unrelated timeout for fast switching.

4. GPO is applied fine as it works for my own account. Also checked settings through the other account which also (naturally) shows same settings.

5. Both users are domain users, I don't use local users at all. I am domain admin (and of course local admin) while wife is normal domain user and local (PC) admin.

Hi,

Is there any event in the event view?

This issue can be caused by driver compatible issue, we can try to roll back the Biometric driver to an older version to see what's going on.

Or install the older version in Windows 8.1 compatible mode.

Hi Kate,

No I cannot find any problem entry in the event tab. Only install and device configured entries. No errors.

I cannot rollback to another driver because the device uses the 8.1 "stock" driver (installed by Windows Update). I didn't manually install any other driver and I doubt there is an older 8.1 version.

Hi,

would you please help to collect the following log for our research? Please upload them to a file sharing service like Onedrive or "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

...erm there is no need to use Onedrive etc.

That log is empty.

I don't know if I had to "enable log" (as seen in your own screen capture too).

I tried that and will let it for a while to see if it collects events.

Kate I actually have interesting results after enabling this log.

I stored just 11 events but are enough to show what is wrong (but not why it is wrong).

- In the first three (3) events I am at my own (domain admin) account. I locked computer and unlocked using the biometrics device. You see the successful login.

- Then I switched to my wife account. There are six (6) events. I was attempting to registed a fingerprint in Change PC Settings/Accounts/Change Sign-in Options/Fingerprint. Those events recorded during my attempts. System ignored my scans number "1 2 3 4 5" never lit up. INTERESTING also that I head the "USB remove" sound while those events got recorded (the biometrics device IS USB). Same happened when I just scanned my finger while on my wife's desktop.

- The last two (2) events, is after I logged off my wife account and used biometrics to login back to my own account.

Any new ideas?
