How old is the battery? Laptop batteries lose their ability to hold a charge as they age.

this laptop is only a few months old....should the battery be gone bad this soon?

That seems too soon to me. Is the computer still under warranty? If so, contact the vendor or manufacturer. I did that recently and received a new battery for free when mine stopped charging in just under one year. It's also possible that the power supply that plugs into the wall has gone bad. Or the charging circuitry in the computer.
