Backups using Windows 7 Home Premium problems
I understand we should be able to create a full system image using Windows 7 built in back up system. I am attempting to store this image onto DVD-R media (TDK 4.7 gb disks) In my Windows 7 Ultimate laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-FW model) this worked fine. Inmy Home Premium versions (2 PCs - also both are Sony Vaio VGN-FW models) when I attempt to create backup disks (DVDs)using the Create aSystem Image option, the backup starts, it asks me to insert a disk of 1 gb or larger (as stated I'm using 4.7 GB disks), it formats the disk, it starts the backup, it states it is preparing the media, then it loops back to insert a disk larger than 1 gb, format, etc. It somehow gets caught in an endless loop. Both of the Home Premium PCs do this identically so I do not believe it's a hardware issue. Is there something else I should be doing with my Home Premium versions to allow this full system Image??? I'm at a loss. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. All 3 laptops have 4 gb ram 2.1GHz or higher duo core processors and 320 GB HDD. One has Windows 7 Ultimate, 2 have Windows 7 Home Premium. All were clean installed to Windows 7 from Windows Vista.

I've seen over the last couple of months where people experience similar problems and it seems to follow a common thread, either the DVD-R media wasn't compatible (so far seen good results for DVD+RW for the most part) or the DVD burner but it appears you're saying that on two other machines that have the same DVD burner it works fine (same media?)MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

All 3 PCs have the same burner installed and I have been using the same media (TDK 4.7gb DVD-R disk). The PC with Windows 7 Ultimate burned the backup to the media as expected and burned a recovery disk appropriately. The 2 PCs with Windows 7 Home Premium fall into this loop and never allow me to complete the burn, and in point of fact, after formating the media, ask me to insert another disk with ever beginning the burn, etc, etc.... I hope this additional info helps to solve the problem. Thanks for your response.Ted

Very interesting, but just out of curiosity, would you mind trying DVD+RW media on the home units. I found some posts that seem to work in that regards. (one post is here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/6f36def3-e433-4418-ba0f-b64a4fd5d385) Stranger things have happen.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

I just saw a similar post. I will have to try that when I get the opportunity to see if that works. Very strange that DVD-R would work with Ultimate, but I need to use DVD-RW with home premium. Hmmmm!!!I'm going on vacation in a couple of days so I'll have to get hopping and get some DVD-RW disks. I'll post again when I have the opportunity. Thanks for you help.Ted

Well it worked. The backup using Windows 7 Home Premium requires DVD-RW media, and will NOT work with DVD-R media. It also works well with an External HDD. I just bought a WD My Book Essentials 2 with 1 TB of storage for $99 at Walmart. How can you beat that!!Ted

I had ordered one for my wife's christmas present from Dell for the same price, along with a photo scanner. She has a tendency to not back up her system, now with Windows 7 and external backup, she'll be fine now. Glad things worked out for you but it is odd that identical machines with different OS's end up having to use different media (DVD) to get a satisfactory result.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

Hi All,There is a known issue with DVD -R media for certain vendors. While the DVD team is working on the resolution, we suggest you to try backup on DVD RW media.Thanks,S.Soudamini.This posting is provided "AS IS" without warranties and confers no rights.
