Backup will not get past Creating Shadow Copy
Hello, I have been trying to backup my machine and it just will not happen. I have select the recommended option and it is backed up to another hard drive. The problem is that the progress bar will not get any further than 7 % and it states creating Shadow Copy. I have left this over 12 hours and it has not moves. There are no errors but 7% in 12 hours is excessive. If I try to stop the backup it then just says stopping. Again left for many hours.Any help would be appreciated.ThanksScott

... The problem is that the progress bar will not get any further than 7 % and it states creating Shadow Copy. I have left this over 12 hours and it has not moves. ... I am having the exactly same problem ever since installing the Windows 7 RC (build 7100). It was working fine for me on the beta build 7000.Note: I did a clean install of Windows 7 RC 64 bit (build 7100), and used "Windows Easy Transfer" program to backup and restore my settings from build 7000 to build 7100. Other than this issue, everything went very smoothly. After running into this problem, I finally rebooted system, deleted the backup directory on my backup drive (which is a 2nd internal sata hd in my system), and tried to backup again. Same problem still happened.

Hello.I believe one of you have raised a bug for this issue. I took a look at the backup traces during this issue:From the backup traces: [0]05FC.0DF4::05/22/2009-22:52:29.531 [engine] [Not excluding MSI registry entry: 02:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\TRIN\Servicing\8.0\SP] [1]05FC.0DF4::05/22/2009-22:52:29.543 [engine] [Excluding MSI file: C:\ProgramData\SupportSoft\DellSupportCenter\_default\data\sprt_resource\31606edc-e726-410d-846e-37412d13e954.4\31606edc-e726-410d-846e-37412d13e954.4.xml] ... [1]1874.0868::05/23/2009-00:29:15.021 [ui_utils] [Either the api SxFindExistingWindow found the existing window's handle or some unexpected error occurred] Backup is stuck while enumerating the MSI files to exclude. The root-cause of this issue is that the MSI API called is throwing up a dialog when it finds that a component is installed to run from source and the source is not available. But since backup is running as local system service, the dialog is not interactive and so backup gets stuck. This is the same as Windows7 bug: 590615 ORT: WIN7: Client: OEM: Lenovo: Backup hangs on system with Lotus Notes InstalledWe have fixed this issue for RTM. We have seen that this issue is not specific to Lotus Notes. There are bunch of other programs whose MSIs behave this way.For now, there is no simple workaround. You could do one of the following:1. Make sure that the location from which the program causing backup hang was installed is available during backup.2. Uninstall the program causing the backup hang.Unfortunately it is not very simple to figure out which program is causing backup to hang (trial and error should work, if possible). Thanks,Sriram [MSFT]

Sriram,I have this exact problem, but it will be very difficult to figure out which of about 20 programs I installed that dayis causing this error. Will the RC get an update to fix this bug? I am assuming an image backup (which works perfectly) can be used as a complete "backup" if I care to use that method, right? Thanks,Bob Evans

Same problem here. Same backup in progress message. Only that when I try to do a backup, mine gets stuck at 39%.

Hi, I have the very same experiences with Backup in Windows 7. The first attempt to create manual backup is Ok but the consecutive automated/manual Backups are terminating on creating shadow copy. It hang up on 7 % and that's all.

Hi ScottI just want to report that I have exactly the same problem as you. The shadow copy progress gets stuck at 7% and has been for days. I have successfuly done a backup on the same machine but then on an other network share, after moving to an other network and using an other network share I got the problem.RegardsPOB
