Backup giving error 0x80070424
Having a problem with Backup. When I click the button to "Change Settings" for setting up a Backup I get the following error:"The backup application could not start due to an internal error. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)"I cannot change the settings. I get the same error message if I click the "Manage space", but after the error msg is closed the Manage Space window does come up and changes can be made. I also get the same error when hit "Close" from within "View Backups" After an automatic backup was done it ended with an error status indicating that the backup did not complete (but it does appear that the backup actually did complete). This work ok after my initial upgrade of Windows7 Home Premium 64bit from Vista two days ago. Since then something has changed...Any ideas??? Thanks Charlie

Hi Charlie.Do you remember what changes you made that caused this issue to occur? We have seen users complain in other forums that System Mechanic 9 caused this error. Can you check if you have this software installed? Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]

Hi Sneha,Thanks for replying. Yes I do have System Mechanic 9 and I do believe that it is causing the problem (I think it is caused by the registry cleaner). I did a registry restore from System Mechanic and then Windows Back and Restore worked correctly. So I am reasonably sure that System Mechanic 9 is causing the problem. I did file a tech support issue to System Mechanic, hopefully they will resolve the problem. In the mean time, I am good. Thanks,Charlie

Hi Sneha I have also posted this on another list 10 days ago I built a new system, with Windows 7 Professional, and the next day I tried to backup, and received the following error message: The backup application could not start due to an internal error. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424) If I reload Windows from the Disc using the repair option, the backup option will then work, for maybe 1 hour to 1 day After finding this post, I checked the registry, when I get the above error there is no "wbengine" in the RegistryControl Set folders in Hkey_local_machine. After reloading windows. the "wbengine" is in the RegistryControl Set folders in Hkey_local_machine. So I started to check out what was happening, after loading windows, I found the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wbengine I Exported it to Desktop as an REG file (as a backup) I then run System Machanic Pro v9, and this said you have registry problems, so I let it fix them, Then checking the registry the "wbengine" had been removed, and the above error appeared. I then imported the the saved reg file, and the backups works. So in my case the "System Machanic pro v9 is causing my problem, How this helps someone. Regards Ted (dexter) PS I have also notified the System Mechanic team.

Ted,Excellent work tracking this down. I also have contacted SM support, but haven't gotten any solution. Another user contacted them and their response was to exclude that registry value from being checked by SM9 "but they don't know what the registry value is"... Can you believe that!!!Thanks, Charlie

Wonderful job! I have exactly this issue and yes, I use SM9. No problem before the Win 7 upgrade. Indeed, the suspect key is missing from my registry. I am addressing this with Iolo. Many thanks!

I think that my problem rests with SM Pro v9 also. Do you think that uninstalling the program would work?MR Knut

I did a system restore too but it did not fix my problem I read other posts that indicated that this problem is caused by System Mechanic Pro v9. Thank you MR KnutMR Knut

MR Knut,I'm not an expert, so take this for what it's worth... You probably need to find an earlier system restore point, one that was saved "before" SM9 registry cleaner changed the registry causing Windows Backup to not work correctly. You could also try doingthe registry restore from within SM9 (SM9 saves your registry before it makes changes, like Windows7 does). From the main SM9 screen (Dashboard), click on the "SafetyNet" menubutton, there you will see all the previously saved registry points. You can try "undoing" them one at a time and test Windows Backup to see if it works. If you can get it to work, follow the instructions in the post above that was made by "dexboy" to exclude the file that Backup needs.Below are the SM9 instructions showing how to exclude a file from the SM9 registry cleaner. http://www.iolo.com/customercare/kbarticle.aspx?ID=KBA-01980The file you need to exclude as "dexboy" found is:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wbengineOnce I figured out how to exclude the file, SM9 works correctly and nowallows Windows Backup to work correctly after a SM9 registry cleanup.

Well, knock on wood - I tried the suggestion from Charlie 16506 to try to undo registry changes from within SM9 using SafetyNet and I do believe it worked! In fact, Backup is running as I type this. I followed the excellent instructionsprovided byCharlie 16506 above.I decided to delete all the changes performed by Registry Cleaner. The process was faster than I expected. You can multiple-select incidents with checkboxes - actually surprisingly friendly. It took multiple passes before all the checked boxes were gone. I then rebooted from the button on the dashboard within SM9. Then went directly to Backup and Restore in Control Panel and clicked to set-up Backup. It worked! Started Backup... Then I went back to SM9 and followed the instructions to exclude keys in Registry Cleaner in the link provided byCharlie 16506 above. This worked exactly as described. I'll let you know what happens after Backup is done (still running!) and I do another registry clean with SM9. Keep your fingers crossed! My thanks to the Technet community, and especiallyCharlie 16506 and dexboy for their excellent work. Obviously they have correctly identified the source of the issue and provided practical solutions. I hope this helps someone else.

Mr. Knut - re: uninstalling SM9. That was the suggestion I got from HP (in their fourth or fifth email - I've lost count.) But if the damage is done, what good would that do? See my post above - I think it works!

OK- I am prepared to call this a fix! After reboot and running SM9 Total Care, Backup now works. Thanks again!

I followed the directions from Iolo for SM Pro v9. I excluded the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wbengine. But still get the Back up error0x80070424.Also, the last step fromIolo #10) Tools>expert mode and I cannot find an expert mode. Thanks MR KnutMR Knut

Hello MR Knut. Have you tried reloading Windows 7 from the Disc (Assuming you have a disc) using the repair option, the backup option will then work, using this option you should not loose any programes or data. If you do not have a disc, download this ((thanks to Flavius Zeno) http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/windows-updates/15639d1252915904-windows-vista-ultimate-backup-computer-help-wbengine.zip Unzip to the Desktop. open regedit, click on File, Import, and select the file "wbengine" on the desktop. Good luck Dexter

Hi MR Knut - I found the checkbox to exclude from subsequent searches directly above the field where the excluded keys are displayed. I think the Iolo instructions cover several versions of SM so this particular instruction may not be accurate for later versions. My backup continues to work fine even with regularly using SM9 - thanks to everyone! P.S. - Replying to a followup email from HP I informed them of the fix I found here, and they sent back what I can only refer to as a rather snotty reply...

I can confirm that the latest System Manager Pro v9.5.1 Dated 4th Dec has now solved the problem of removing the "wbengine" from the registry. Thanks to all concerned. Dexter (merry Christmas)

After total HD failure backup location was not found any more (error 4103; 0x81000006) and attempt to change backup settings provoked internal error 0x80070424. Clearing and re-introducing "wbengine" into registry solved the problem. Thanks.

Sneha, I'm encountering the same problem as others have reported, i.e. Windows 7 Professional and the following error message when I try to initiate "Set up backup": The backup application could not start due to an internal error. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424) My difference from the others is that I'm not running System Mechanic. I have a new (2 weeks old) Dell Studio XPS laptop with W7 preinstalled. Although I haven't installed System Mechanic, I have run other registry cleaners (i.e. CCleaner, Dell PC TuneUp and Norton Internet Security). Several Dell tech specialists have tried and failed to fix the problem, including several attempts to restore wbengine. Do you have any suggestions as to how I should proceed? Keith

Well I do not have any type of registry repair software, the backup feature with my windows 7 just stoped working all on its own. System restore does not fix the problem and reloading windows 7 from disk does not fix problem. The regidtry entry Dexter quotes does not fix the priblem. So does anyone have an idea how to fix it this way?
