Backup error 0x800700002
Hi, I have this error, but not related to any file or directory. HKEY_LOCALMACHINE...ProfileList seems to be ok as well. There is only a empty Standard Key, but this can't be deleted. I have 2 errors in the event log... First comes this Protokollname: Application Quelle: Microsoft-Windows-Backup Datum: 24.01.2010 21:52:23 Ereignis-ID: 517 Aufgabenkategorie:Keine Ebene: Fehler Schlüsselwörter: Benutzer: SYSTEM Computer: mycomputer Beschreibung: Fehler bei der um ‎2010‎-‎01‎-‎24T20:49:10.717050400Z gestarteten Sicherung. Actually I never saw a succesful backup. Why can't the big MS get a *backup* program right? Really makes me worried about the quality in general. Thanks, Tobias

First I would do the system file checker just to make sure everything is in order sfc /scannow from the command line. If no errors found then if possible make a Restore Point before doing this. If not, then for each key on LEFT in RegEdit highlight it and then click FILE above and EXPORT the key before changing it. If you make a mistake find the Key you changed and Right Click on it and MERGE and you will be right back where you were. (These keys are not critical so you can do that, in other circumstances a change to the Registry in other areas is not so easy to reverse.)How to Create a System Restore Point in Vistahttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.htmlHow to Do a System Restore in Vistahttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.htmlThis problem is due to one or more profiles under :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList with missing ProfileImagePath. To check whether you have missing profiles:1. Open regedit, navigate to the above registry key. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList). Expand the list2. Click on each of the profiles listed. The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile,%SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and%SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkServicerespectively.3. Starting from the 4th profile, the ProfileImagePath should contain path to the user profiles on your machine, such as C:\users\Brian4. If one or more of the profile has no profile image, then you have missing profiles. To work around this, delete the profile in question (Caution: The registry contains critical settings that are necessary for your system to function properly. Take extra caution while making changes)1. First, export the ProfileList key for safekeeping. (Right click on the key, choose “Export”, and save it to the desktop.)2. Right click on the profile in question, choose delete.3. Try backup again.Hope this helps.Make sure the external drive is good and doesn't have corruption, as that will kill the backup. That's probably why you had problems with the Vista backup. Hi Tobias, Please let us kno when the issue began to happen, how do you backup your machine, and where are the backup files saved? Generally, the error 0x800700002 may occur if there are duplicate accounts on the computer. Since you have checked the profilelist entry already. To fix your issue, it's better to make a backup in the Build-in account.1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the “Start Search” box . 2. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator. 3. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue. 4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER. net user administrator /active:yes5. Type exit, and then press ENTER.6. Log off the current user account and log on the build-in account.7 Try to make a backup again. Note: If your backup files are saved on the external hard driver or the network hard driver, please make backup on your local hard drive as a test. Good luck! John

Guys thanks a lot for your quick responses. But I had to find out that the solution to all problems with Windows Backup is simple: Do not use Windows Backup! It's fubar . http://my-tech-talk.blogspot.com/2010/01/do-not-use-windows-backup.html
