Backup Vista to network drive
Hi, I want to backup my vista client to a network drive (WS-2003) using Windows Backup. The clienthas 3 partitions, which I all want to backup. But no matter what I change, it never comes to a succesfull finish. The message indicates there is not enough disk space for the shadow copy. The network drive has almost 1 TB free diskspace, so that should be enough... I gave any access to this drive, to anyone, but problem remains. It looks like Vista tries to use the D: partition to store data temporary... Anyone can help with this ? Leon

Hi, When doing a Windows Complete PC backup and Restore image, you can onlu back up to CD,DVD,or hard disk, and you can't include the drive to which you are backing up in the backup. Please ensure that the network disk is the removable hardisk on this machine, but not the network shareing disk. Below steps is about how to perform backup in Windows Vista 1. Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Backup. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Allow.2. Click Enable automatic backup schedule if the Automatic Backup is disabled. 3. Click Change backup settings. If we have saved the settings before and would like to use the existing settings to back up the files, we can directly click Start to create a new backup. 4. Choose where to save the backup file.If you choose to save the backup file on the local disk or CD/DVD drive, please select the disk in the drop down list and click Next. 5. Please choose the disk you would like to back up and click Next. Note: The disk that Windows is installed on will always be included in the backup. 6. Then, we can choose what type of the files to back up and click Next. 7. Please set the schedule to back up the files. After setting the schedule, please click Save settings and start backup. A dialog box titled "Windows Backup" will now run in the background. If you would like to start the back up, please click Yes. When the backup process has finished, a pop-up window will show Backup is successful. Also if the problem still persists, then please post the detail error information here. Hope it helps. Am trying to run Vista Home Premium to backup files to a network attached storage device. I created a user account on the NAS and assigned it full privileges to the folder. When I click on Backup to Network Device in the backup wizard, it asks for username and password. After I provided these, a window pops up that says "The network share could not be accessed for the following reason: The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA) Please ensure that the network location is valid" Any idea what is causing this, and what I can do to fix it? Thanks !!

Are you saying that there is no way on Vista Business I can use the vista backup utility to a network drive? This drive has been mapped and can be accessed in explorer, but does not come up as an available drive for backup. Hi: I still do not understand your instructions for backing up Vista to a network attached drive. I too have a large Network attached drive which I have mapped. The mapped drive does not come up in the drive window and under the network selection, there is always an error statement.

The reason you don't understand the answer is because Xiu didn't answer the question. You people need to stop thanking the Microsoft responders for thier crappy responses when they either don/t or can't answer the questions. The question was "I want to backup my vista client to a network drive (WS-2003) using Windows Backup.". The answer is the same for Windows 7. NO, you cannot do it. For what ever unjustifiable reason, if you want to backup to a Network drive or a Networked Storage (NAS or SAN), you cannot. You have to use a third party program, such as BackupExec, for this basic functionality. For Windows Backup the drive has to be locally attached. I am sure there is a ridiculous Marketing reason and a real reason, but the function just isn't there. Perhaps someone has a way to fool Win Backup into using a network drive, perhaps with a tool or registry edit, like the remote or networked CD-Rom utils\hacks in WinXP?? Anyone?
