Backup Problem
After I installed Windows 7 everything seemed okay or as okay as onewould expect with a solid Beta. I decided to test the Backup App. The first time I used it, it worked as expected. However the second time I tried to use it none of the buttons or links on the right hand side of the control panel section for backup would respond. I then tried the links on the left hand side of backup section and was able to do an image backup. Has anyone had a similiar experiance or any thoughts on what might be causing the problem? I also tried to reinstall hoping if it was a broken file it would be repaired, no luck on that end.Thank you, LTK

Sorry, when I tried it worked correctly, and when you say reinstalled, do you mean a clean install, or a repair?

Thank you for trying. It worked for me the first time, then it stopped. Thinking the backup program may have gotten corrupted I tried to reinstall the operating system over the previous install. I did not format the disk and try a clean install. I suspect the beta does not repair files or it did not find anything wrong with the files. I am pretty sure it is a problem with the file and not a bug. I dont want to format the hard disk at this time so I will have to just do a image backup which strangley is still possible.Peace, LTK

I posted a comment on another tread related to backup. It WAS working great. I ran a few backups no problems did some restores no problem ... NOW when I run a backup, the program hangs at 7% complete during the 'Shadow Copy' Process.I deleted all the backups and images, still no good cannot get it to run.To make sure I do not have to do a re-install from base 0 - I use a drive clone program that works great - both live and in 'local' mode, CASPER 5.0, it works great. I use it for XP VISTA and W7. Yes I have a pile of backup USB/ESATA drives with clones of all my OS and computers. I have used the XML backup program, but I have not figured out how to restore live?? Or what program to load to restore an XML image. When the W7 backup/image worked it was OK. But now I have not figured out why it hangs on the Shadow Copy process??Ideas?RR

Hi RogerR-7:Your issue seems to be similar to the below issue. It is a bug in RC, corrected in RTM. Please also find the probable work arounds in the below thread.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/c8cf5990-aeaf-4812-80da-540ccae807e3Hi Luvthekeys,Regret the inconvenice. We have not seen such an issue before. To confirm,1. "...none of the buttons and links would not respond..." - means you are able to click the links ("Change settings" and "Backup now") but nothing happens on clicking?2. Just closing and re-opening of the 'Backup and Restore' control panel does not help?3. Restarting the system does not help? Can you try restarting the 'Windows Backup' service from services.msc and see if that solves the issue? Also can you check if links on right hand side of other control panels(may be 'Recovery Control Panel' or 'Action Center') are working fine?Let me know the above details and i will take a deeper look into this. Thanks,Lokesh [MSFT]

I'm having this issue with Win7 x64 ultimatefinal (upgraded from x64 vista ultimate). Same thing, buttons on right side ofbackup panel don't work, other panels seem fine. Can initiate backup manually via action center or SDCLT without an issue, the control panel for backup's buttons don't work though. Have tried all recommendations and while I can get a backup going manually, the control panel buttons are still broken.

Well ,like it seems you're not the only one! Now ,I have the same problem ,and no solution yet. I've installed Windows clean a week ago ,and everything worked fine untill today! I've made backup last time on tuesday ,and buttons worked. Today problems - I've tried with resetting backup through registry ,but that didn't helped. I can set up and start backup through Autoplay options of backup partition ,but that's it!! Can't Manage Space ,Change Settings or anithing else on right side of panel. Only button that works is Restore my files. I've tried everything option ,only thing left is to restore OS from image I've made right after installation.

Hello Kizo2703,The issuehas been found. Itseems to be caused bysome 3rd party apps not implementing their context menu(right click option) correctly. One such app we have found is an older version of Quicksfv. (They seem to have corrected it now.) So if you have quicksfv installed and are facing this issue, you can either un-install and install the latest one or check for the below reg key and add it if not already present.1. regedit->[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellCompatibility\Objects\{906b0e6e-61ce-11d3-8ee2-0060080a7242}]"CTXMENU_NOVERBS"=""(right click-> New->'String Value'->CTXMENU_NOVERBS->Enter)Other apps which we have found causing this issue is i. "MoveTo CopyTo Context Menu" - gives a right click Move To option - Guid {C8F9EE0B-60AE-40C6-930D-6395F46358E5}ii. "CompareIt!" - (installed with 'Shell extension' option) - Guid {398D6F03-7C65-4462-A173-95247F028785}If the guids are not present in the 'Objects' reg key, then you need to add the guid and then add the string value.Steps:1. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellCompatibility\Objects2. If theapps guid(mentioned above)is not present, right click on 'Objects'->New->Key-><guid value>3. Now click on the <guid> key, on the right side-> new-> 'String Value'-> CTXMENU_NOVERBSIf none of the above apps are installed on your machine, send a mail at lokkum"at"microsoft"dot"com and i can pass youa tool to find the app and make necessary changes to the registry. Thanks,Lokesh [MSFT]
