Backup Fails after installing Windows 7
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. When the scheduled backup ran it failed due to lack of disk space. The disk is 320 GB with 12.5 GB in two files. The backup is 115GB and appears to be complete but I still get the message that the backup failed due to lack of disk space. The backup worked fine with Vista Home Premium but now has a problem.

You may open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore, click Manage space, check the space usage and let us know the situation. Please temporary disable the anti-virus. If the issue still occurs, I suggest that you change the setting, select to not include a system image when backup. Then, run Windows Backup. Please let us know if the issue occurs this time. If the issue reoccurs, please open Event Viewer, locate to Application and Service Logs\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsBackup\ActionCenter, try to find the backup process that cause the hanging issue. Also, please run the following command: vssadmin list writers > %userprofile%\desktop\vsswriters.txt Then open the file vsswriters.txt from Desktop, and try to find which writer has errors. You may either paste the contents in your post. Please also manually do a system image backup and see if the issue occurs.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I assume you are using the default windows configuration(recommended) in win7 to backup your machine. In Win7, system image backup also runs as part of the default protection to add more security from disaster recovery. The total space required on the target would be a) The files in all user's libraries + (b) 120% of used space on critical volumes. If you decide not to do system image backup, you can select let me choose option and deselect the system image backup.Thanks,S.Soudamini.--This posting is provided "AS IS" without warranties and confers no rights.

I discontinued the system image option and the backup is now running with only a minor error. Here are the details:Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\IUSR_NMPR\AppData\LocalLow. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\IUSR_NMPR\Contacts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\IUSR_NMPR\Searches. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))I was doing some things while the backup was running, but nothing unusual. I will run it again after a restart unless you have other ideas. The drive properties now show 131GB used and 166GB free.

The account IUSR_NMPR may be created by a program. It does not exist on our Windows 7 computers. You can delete this user profile. If you would like to know which program created this account, I suggest you enable user account management auditing. 1. Click Start. Enter gpedit.msc in the Start Search box. 2. Locate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy.3. Double-click on Audit account management. 4. Select both Success and Failure. 5. Restart. If your system is Windows 7 Home Premium, please enable it via Registry. 1. Enter regedit in the Start Search box. 2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA 3. Right-click SCENoApplyLegacyAuditPolicy, and then click Modify.4. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK. If this key does not exist, please manually create. 5. Restart the computer. When you find that this account was created, please access Event Viewer, check the Security log as soon as possible. Lets see if we can find some clues.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I deleted the account problem and the backup now runs without error. I did manually create the registry subkey you suggestedand restarted. I went toEvent Viewer and scanned contorl-fto try and find an occurranceofIUSR-NMPR but did not find any. Not sure that it is important now that the backup is running without error unless it creates itself again.I am going to try and backup onlythe system image on another drive sinceI have three physical drives. Thanks for your support on this.Bob
