Backing up files in windows 7
Having looked at and tried backup and restore in W7 it seems very mickey mouse. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how to a) backup selected files and folders and b)have the program confirm on screen or via email that the backup was successful. A bonus (c) would be to encrypt said backup. I can get W7 B&R to backup, but it doesn't even say it was successful and could see no way of forcing notification. Also, no encryption. Anyone found a way of using this software to do any of the above, or a recommendation on alternative cheap or free software? I have a customer who has a PC on a peer-to-peer and wants to back up to usb key automatically from that PC. Is software being dumbed down and in the process useful functionality being lost? I can't find a way of making Win7 backup run as usefully as say XP did, via cmd or gui. Thanks Dellboy

a) backup selected files and folders You can choose contents to backup. Please see: How does Windows choose which files to back up? b) have the program confirm on screen or via email that the backup was successful. Launch Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore. If the last backup is not successful it will show in the control panel. c) would be to encrypt said backup. You can back up to a Bitlocker encrypted drive. However the drive needs to be unlocked before backup. You can then lock it after the backup finishes. Additionally, I have a customer who has a PC on a peer-to-peer and wants to back up to usb key automatically from that PC. If you would like to back up to a USB key, the scheduled backup cannot include image backup.Arthur Xie - MSFT
