Backing up and restoring the complete registry
Hi Question 1: Does creating and restoring a system restore point backup and restore the complete registry? (If the computer is in use, certain registry keys are in use and cannot be written to). But what if Windows 7 wont boot can do the following... Question 2: It's possible to create a complete backup of the registry by exporting the whole registry into a file. For the same reason mentioned above, an import of this file will fail as some keys in use cannot be written to. I have a dual boot system with 3 partitions: XP, WIN7, DATA. Is it possible to boot from the Windows 7 DVD, select Repair and then command line and from there use regedit and the aforementioned file to completely restore the registry? Can I specify which partition on which I'd like the registry to be repaired? Thanks for your help

Hello Enoqeze, 1) System Restore would back up and restore the complete registry. 2) I would not export and then attempt to import the registry back as a means of backing up the registry. I would attempt to use something like Reg,exe to save off all the hives, example: Reg.exe save hklm\system system.bkp Then boot to WinRE offline and replace the files if needed. Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Hi Darrell. I've had a look at reg.exe but I can't understand how one would restore the hive using reg.exe in WinRE The format for restoring is... REG RESTORE KeyName Filename But having booted into WinRE how does reg.exe know which partition (I have a few) to use to repair the registry (especially if you have a dual booting scenario) Thanks again

Hello Enoqeze, You are saving the entire registry hive, it's not an export, it's a hive so it's just a copy of the file in WinRE. you do not use reg.exe in WinRE, so you would copy and replace if needed. There should be backup of the registry in the \windows\system32\config\regback folder already. Are they not there? Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I use ERUNT and have done so since Windows 2000. Works well with Windows 7.Rich The only two things that are infinite in size are the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not completely sure about the universe. - Albert Einstein
