Backing Up Remote SharePoint Folders with Windows 7
I have SharePoint 2008 running on a Windows 2008 Server at my business office. I work from my home office where I have my Windows 7 Ultimate machine, and I have the SharedFolders for each of my SharePoint sites mounted as Windows Explorer Shared Network Folders so that I can easily access, move, and backup the *FILES* I have on SharePoint, from my Windows 7 Ultimate homes office machine. I want to be able to AUTOMATE/schedule backups of my SharePoint folders/files (running on Windows Server 2008) using Backup and Restore on my home office Windows 7 Ultimate machine - giving me offsite backup/storage of critical files. It makes NO SENSE to me that I CAN copy the files manually to my home office NAS (which I do), but I cant seem to automate the process using Windows 7 Ultimate Backup and Restore. It keeps saying that I cant do that ... What am I doing wrong, or what is an alternative way for me to "get there from here?" Any help would be much appreciated!

>> You want the Server 2008 backup & restore service to backup your sharepoint data across the WAN >> to your windows 7 home office system on a automated schedule, correct? No, I do separate SQL Server backups on my Windows 2008/2003 Server machines where SharePoint is running. That is at my business office downtown. I also have a home office where I work from (~3 miles from my business office). I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on my *home office* machine. What I have done is create a Network Shared Folder on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine for one of my "Shared Documents" repositores on one of my SharePoint sites. That "Network Shared Folder" allows me to access, edit, and make copies of the *FILES* stored on SharePoint (in my business office) using Windows Explorer on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine in my home office. What I am doing right now is *manually* making backup copies of those SharePoint *files* by copying the "Network Shared Folder" to a NAS I have in my home office. This provides me REMOTE backup copies of documents on my SharePoint servers for catastropic recovery purposes, and also in case someone simply does something stupid - like accidentally deleting a document on my SharePoint server. So - right now I can do the backups I am talking about *manually*. I simply drag-n-drop the "Network Shared Folder" onto my NAS, and copies of the files are sucked down from my SharePoint server and put on my NAS in my home office. I LOVE IT! I want to automate the process. But Windows 7 Ultimate Backup and Restore will ONLY allow me to select local harddrives for backup (how WEAK!). If I can do this manually, there MUST BE A WAY to AUTOMATE IT SOMEHOW! FYI - I am an "ex-programmer", 20+ years of Assembler, C++, C, VBScript, JAVA etc - but I moved to management (and IT) ~10 years ago. Most of those skills have dulled with time and graying hair. So if someone has VBScript solution, or something along those lines, I can probably still hack my way around in it and make a go of it. I am open to any solutions/ideas anyone has, and I really appreciate the help! Thanx again! Gene in AZ

Hi Gene, There is no Sharepoint 2008 that I am aware of. Are you referring to 2010? download SharePoint Designer 2010 (it's free). It allows you to synch ronize a local copy of your Sharepoint sites with the server. Then you can use a backup utility to backup from local disk to the NAS. I am ruuning two servers at the downtown office - one is running Windows Server 2008, and SharePoint 2007 (? - its been a while since I installed it...), then the other server is running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005. I've thought upgrading to SharePoint to 2010, but not sure what it would get us - and I really dont want to break what is working well right now. Thank you for the suggestion and will try your idea for SharePoint Designer. :-) Gene in AZ
