Back up doesn't work
I agree with the spanish speaking person. After running one backup the next backup does not actually update anything even though backup runs for a long time and says that it has completed successfully. The k-drive on HP Pavillion Elite E9280t shows no indication that files were actually udated on 12/20/2009 as they should have been. Backup is slow. It also seems lame that backup will not occur automatically if the computer is asleep.Windows 7HP Pavillion EliteHP Personal Media Drive

Hi,If your are talknig about Gommace and ththis thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/a1a913c5-0bd9-450b-880c-d1d54ec41a6e?prof=required. It seems to be a different problem because for him his successive backups are failing. Please elaborate the problems you are facing. You have mentioned that for you successive backup is successful. Windows backup backs up incrementally after first full backup and backs up only new and changed files. Time taken to backup depends on the amount of new and changed data after first full backup. Can you please confirm that your backup target (I assume K:) has created a folder under k:\<MachineName>\BackupSet<FirstBackupDate-time>\BackupFiles<Successive backup date time>. If that is created it means it has taken an incremental backup.Another way you can be sure that all your changed files are backed up. 1. Go to "Restore my files" option on Backup and restore control panel.2. Goto "Choose a different date" link. Choose the second backup date.3. Search for any file which was added after the first backup. You should be able to find it.If the results are different form expected or still have any queries please post them on this thread. Regarding the backup not occurring automatically on sleep, we appreciate your feedback and will keep it in mind for future. Thanks,Neha[MSFT]

It's better to describe your problem clearly. In my oninion, I agree with neha, you can try to make a backup after creating a new folder on the Desktop, after backup finished, make some changes for the folder, then you can restore the backup file, and test if there are difference.Good luck! John

Thank you for your response. The backup target is K: but there is no folder K:\<MachineName>\BackupSet.........etc When I go to the Control Panel.... Backup Files and click on "Restore Files" I get the message "There are no Backups at this location" The HP Media drive is working because I copied all my music and documents to it and that worked fine. When I first got the computer I used the HP program to do the backup and then used the Windows7 backup to see which worked best. There is a file on the K: Drive that says "Backup Files" and contains 15,639 files and was updated on 11/22/2009 at 1:55:15 pm. I think this folder may have been created by the backup that I did using the HP backup program. The backup process seemed straight forward but apparently I have missed a step somewhere or the initial test I did using the HP backup caused a problem. Thanks, 1turtle333

If there is no <MachineName> folder on that target it means that there is no backup residing on that target. Can you please refer to blog post here to set up backup:http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/archive/2009/10/23/protect-your-files-and-pc-with-windows-7-backup.aspxIf the backup is not able to create backup to your target, it will fail with appropriate error. If you still face any issues, please post your queries. Thanks,Neha

First, I recommend you to make a backup for your user file using the following steps to test your issue.1. Open Control Panel ans start creating a backup from the Backup and Restore center.2. Choose your partition D or E as the backup target.3. After that you can now choose what to backup. let's shoose the option "Let me choose", you can choose a small folder under your user accout,Note: uncheck the option before the "Include a system image of drivers: Unnamed driver,".4. You can start your backup process. If you get the error, please collect a screenshot for the error messge, and upload the screenshot in the public folder of your Skydrive. If you can make a backup without any error, you can refer to the following link to restore the backup files.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Restore-files-from-a-backupGood luck!John

I have refered to , read, studied, and all but memorized the information contained in Microsoft's "protect your files and pc with Windows 7 backup". From what I'm reading on this forum and many, many others, it simply DOES NOT WORK. I am not particularly PC literate, but I'm not totally stupid either. Nor do I have time to try the dozens of possible "work arounds" that other smarter than I but just as frustrated people have figured out. How would I know which one would work for me? As it is I have spent all day today reading about other people's attempts to backup their data under Windows 7. I want to know my data is backed up. Why can't I do it with Windows Backup? and please don't refer me back to the page on how to do it because it doesn't work!!!!!!! I'm running an HP media Center m8020N 32bit. It came preloaded with Vista. I purchased a Windows 7 upgrade and upgraded. I have been able to create a system repair disk and make a system image backup of both drive C and drive D (recovery drive) to drive E. I have no idea if drive D is the recovery partition being referred to above. But it SHOULDN'T MATTER because I want to back my data up to DVD's. Like many other frustrated people, I find the backup starts, tells me it needs to format the DVD (Why? These same DVD's worked under the Vista Backup) then it runs for a long time before telling me that "Windows Backup did not complete successfully" with a red bar across the page and another message saying "the backup did not complete successfully". When I click "Options" I get a window that has an X in a red circle and says "Check your backup- The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". Under show details it shows error code: 0x80070450D. I have "tried to run backup again", "changed my backup settings" and searched Microsoft (and Google) for this error code in relation to Windows 7. PLEASE VIVIAN XING help us poor folks who use microsoft operating systems
