Back up Vista to a Network Drive
Hi: I still do not understand your instructions for backing up Vista to a network attached drive. I too have a large Network attached drive which I have mapped. The mapped drive does not come up in the drive window and under the network selection, there is always an error statement. I have read a number of others with this problem, but still cannot get it to work.

Hi DwightS, thanks for the post. Before we go further, please let me know the brand/model of the network drive. Based on my knowledge, some kind of NAS that uses previous version of Samba type implementation does not support the backup service and it does no appear in Windows Vista as an available backup recourses. Meanwhile, to use a NAS device as a backup target, you need to create the share with "Full Control" privileges for the user whose credentials they want to connect with. If this doesn't work, we recommend contacting your NAS manufacturer to ask them for upgraded firmware based on 3.x version of Samba. You can also check the following thread regarding the similar issue: Vista Backup and Restore center will not backup to Network Location http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistaapps/thread/f545e8ae-46fc-4bee-bfd8-be1fe1151e04/ Hope this helps! Sean: This did not help. I beleive I have set up the NAS with full control. It is a Plextor PX-EH Series drive. I am disappointed with MS Vista. This all woprked perfectly in XP. DwightS

Thanks for the update, DwightS. What is the exact error statement you receive under network selection? Have you found any related error or solution in the above thread "Vista Backup and Restore center will not backup to Network Location"? Sean Zhu - MSFT

This thread seems to die out, but I still would like to know if a solution is available. Keep in mind my knowledge about networks is very limited, but Ialso ran into the same problem. I own a WD sharespace 4TB network drive and although theWD sharespace shows up in the network, just like e.g. my router does, the mounted drives do not show up asa stationon which Ican make a backup of any kind.(Vista 64 Ultimate). I can to some extend imagine why DwightS doesn't show up anymore andseems disappointed about Vista, since you seem to look for the problem in the network drive, but he assumesthe problemshould not be looked for in the drive, because XP did/does not seem to have the problem using the same drive.
