BUG: Removed feature NetworkMap.dll and Router driver
There is a
UPnP Router driver on the Microsoft Update website that needs to be updated for Windows 8, to take into account that the Network Map feature has been removed.
If you have Windows 8 you can see the problem for yourself by going to your 'Network' folder (in Windows explorer) you will see a blank router icon, if you right click it you will also see a "Network Map" shell extension (also present in the 'Devices
and Printers' control panel)

If you click "Network Map" you will get this error (because this feture has been removed from Windows 8)

Clearly there needs to be a update of the driver for Windows 8, one with the Network Map shell extension removed and pointing to a icon in other than in NetworkMap.dll (you can find the same icon @2372 in DDORes.dll)

I have temporarily been using a REG file to fix this issue, here it is in case anybody wants it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
; Corrects blank router icon
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NetworkExplorerPlugins\VEN_0033&DEV_0008&REV_01\DefaultIcon]
@="%SystemRoot%\\System32\\DDORes.dll,-2372"
; Removes "Network Map" shell extension from 'Network' explorer
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NetworkExplorerPlugins\VEN_0033&DEV_0008&REV_01\shell]
; Removes "Network Map" shell extension from 'Devices and Printers' control panel
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\DeviceDisplayObject\HardwareId\UMB#VEN_0033&DEV_0008&REV_01]
Here is what it should look like with the icon corrected and the shell extension(s) removed

I have a Linksys and my friend has a Gateway, we both have the same issue. So my guess is that almost everybody with a UPnP capable router has the EXACT bug and don't know it

Does anyone know if Microsoft is working or even aware of this driver bug?
Its been awhile since Windows 8 has been out and I find it strange that this particular driver has not been updated...I am willing to bet that 90% of people with Windows 8 are affected by this

Thank you very much for this. I recently discovered this problem on my Win 8 Pro install with a Netgear WNDR3700v4 router.
I also have a bug where under "Network Infrastructure", I see my neighbors unprotected WNR620N router of which I am not and never was connected to.

Using Windows 8.1, this driver bug still there. Microsoft still has not updated this UPnP driver

This seems like one of those things that Microsoft should be able to see as a bug just by using Windows on a daily basis, but they will never fix?

None, same old Windows 7 driver on Microsoft Update. Now they added that its 8.1 compatible, when its still not!!!

Hi,
I just ran into this issue myself with a new Netgear modem/router. Thanks for the registry keys, wasn't looking forward to searching for them myself.
It is amazing that Microsoft hasn't done anything about this since Windows 8 has been released or since you brought it up (quite a while ago), it's not like they need to rewrite the whole thing.
Anyway, it is a minor issue, but the accumulation of all the small issues can become a bit annoying and seems like Microsoft never really cares about the details, which I think is one of the reasons why a lot of people complain.

OK, I know I am replying to an older thread, but thank you this helped.
I was able to get the icon back, part one of the registry edit, but part 2 I wasn't sure what to do. Do I need to delete the entire "Shell" entry?
And the third one just add #VEN_0033&DEV_0008&REV_01] to the end?
I just want to be sure when I am messing in the registry
Thanks

Yes, you delete the '\Shell' and the '\UMB#VEN_0033&DEV_0008&REV_01' keys, or you could simple copy/paste the reg code I have into a .txt (later rename to .reg) and apply this. This will get the job done

Thankx a lot, it was very helpful.
It works on Windows 10 Pro x64 too.
Only one thing, should correct
"%SystemRoot%\\System32\\DDORes.dll,-2372"
because were two slash "\\"
Good work really.
