BSOD with external hard drive
I, too, am experiencing the blue screen of death. It happens when dragging and dropping files to the external hard drive and/or copying and pasting files to the external hard drive. The external hard drive is a Seagate - FreeAgent Go Model: ST903203FG which is supposed to be Windows 7 compatible and did install without incident. OS is a custom install, retail version, Windows 7, 64-bit. From the minidump file you received a VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (Bugcheck 116) (Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed) caused by the nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver). You appear to be running the 195.39 beta GeForce drivers. However the timestamp on the nvlddmkm.sys does not seem to match that version. In any event, there may be a corruption of the video drivers so you could try uninstalling the video drivers and reinstalling them.If problems persist revert to a previous version of video drivers that were stable.BTW, when did this problem start and did it coincide with any software or hardware change? Are you over-clocking in any way?

In addition to updating your video drivers as auggy suggested, if you have 4GB or more of RAM, you might want to try the fix mentioned here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/38f25c1d-de67-4c74-8845-2cd3a15d8e41Want to know if your current hardware & software will work with Windows 7? If problems persist revert to a previous version of video drivers that were stable. BTW, when did this problem start and did it coincide with any software or hardware change? Are you over-clocking in any way? The problem occurred in the midst of doing a custom install of Win 7 Pro on a machine that came with Win Vista Home Premium. A different external hard drive -- purchased solely for the transfer -- barely got the job done before crashing. After multiple crashes and uninstalls, the ext hard drive would no longer install. Went back to the store and exchanged for the Seagate. Same thing happening but less severe in that Seagate drivers properly installed -- according to Windows. Attempting to follow your advice and ignoring Windows Update which said all my drivers were updated, I opened Device Manager > Display adapters > Right-clicked GeForce 9100 driver > Properties > General > "This device is working properly" Still yet, I Right-clicked GeForce 9100 driver > Update Driver Software . . . > Search automatically > and I got an update! Although the computer has stopped with the BSOD, dragging/dropping files and/or copying/pasting still doesn't work. I'll try either method with a folder, a couple of the files transfer then a popup appears saying J:/folder name no longer exists. ??? Why would I have a beta driver? If I uninstall drivers, where do I get others to re-install? I have no idea what "over-clocking" is let alone if the computer is doing it. (Sigh)

Check out these links: **Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ** **Windows 7 Compatibility Center ** Looking in the Device Manager there's several Nvdia drivers but NO specific "NVIDIA USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) chipset" listed anywhere. The hotfix say not to install unless all the conditions are present -- I have a known 3 out of 4. How am I supposed to know what chipset I have? You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The computer has an NVIDIA USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) chipset. The computer has at least 4GB of RAM. You try to copy data from the computer to an external USB storage device.

It seems that you are using "NVIDIA USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) chipset" as you are using integrated video adapter 9100 from Nvidia.Sean Zhu - MSFT

Maybe I am - maybe I'm not using the "NVIDIA USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) chipset" Installed the hotfix recommended above and the computer is back to blue-screening. So now what? dmp files uploaded to: http://cid-4b79a762f0667f45.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Windows7/111209-18782-01.dmp

I would suggest to uninstall the video drivers that are now installed via "Uninstall a program" and then download and install the following drivers from NVIDIA:http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_191.07_whql.htmlIf problems persist try a "clean boot" and see if the problem still exists:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135Follow Step 1 to clean boot and Step 7 to return to a normal startup.

Guess I shouldn't have said "This didn't do a thing" because actually the recommended fixes have changed the problem. first post: BCP1: FFFFFA8009F5E010 BCP2: FFFFF88004999220 last post: BCP1: FFFFFA8006D394E0 BCP2: FFFFF880057D0220 AND Although I just deleted all my Nvdia drivers and installed all the latest from http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_191.07_whql.html Windows Update says it has nvdia updates. ??? Since I'm still getting the BSOD, I installed them. Going to try the ext. drive again. (edit) Yippee!! The same ol' BSOD with still yet another BCP1 & 2. Although I just deleted all my Nvdia drivers and installed all the latest from http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_191.07_whql.html Windows Update says it has nvdia updates. ??? That's unusual. If you installed the 191.07 drivers Windows Update should not flag the video drivers as needing an update.Perhaps the drivers are/were not properly installed.Your Windows 7 installation wasa "clean install" rather than an upgrade "over-top" of a previous Windows installation, correct?
November 13th, 2009 9:24pm

yes. I'm wondering if the hotfix was installed properly. I've never done it before. The files unzipped then what? The directions don't say. I did nothing. The computer did nothing. ??? Hey, I'm not beyond chucking the whole thing and starting over. If I knew the problem would be fixed

For the KB976972 hotfix after unzipping the file(s) to a location such as the C: drive you then have to go to that location and click on the installer (Windows6.1-KB976972-x64.msu)to install and then reboot.

Thank you, auggy. But &*^@$! too bad the instructions -- that I followed to a T -- didn't ever mention that. I guess I'll go to the top of this thread and start all over again.

Thank you, auggy. But &*^@$! too bad the instructions -- that I followed to a T -- didn't ever mention that. I guess I'll go to the top of this thread and start all over again. Unfortunately, going to the top of the thread and starting over had disasterous results.Windows 7 has (yet again) been clean installed. The first thing I did was install and try to add files to the exterior hard drive.Install was successful. However, transferring files to the ext. hard drive again resulted in(yet another) BSOD.Other thaninstallingmy anti-virus software in order to safely navigate to this site and making sure all windows updates are installed, no other changes have been made to the computer.I know you've answered before, but obviously simply "starting from the top of the thread" was not a good thing. Please help get this problem corrected.Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 116 BCP1: FFFFFA8009556010 BCP2: FFFFF880048A2490 BCP3: 0000000000000000 BCP4: 0000000000000002 OS Version: 6_1_7600 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 256_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\111309-24273-01.dmp C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-57049-0.sysdata.xml <iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:98px;height:115px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-4b79a762f0667f45.skydrive.live.com/embedicon.aspx/Windows7/111309-24273-01.dmp"></iframe>(Sorry, I have no email client yet)
