BSOD with Adobe Lightroom... any suggestions?
I use Adobe Lightroom every day or 2. With Windows 7, I get the Blue Screen of Death approximately twice a week while using Lightroom. (PC & software details below). I can't vouch for every instance, butthe last 3 or 4 times,BSOD occurred (1) while importing photos from a SD card or (2) whileviewing photos, zooming in & out. Interestingly, the problem has not occurredwhile I processphotos, amuch more resource-intensive task. As an aside, no data loss has occurred with BSOD, even when it happened during photo import. When using Lightroom, I always have other programs open-- usually Opera (I know, anathema) and Windows Live Mail. With Vista, Lightroom would hang (not responding) & occasionally would crash, but it never induced BSOD. The hanging & crashinghave rarely occurred with W7. Your thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome. aimzzz,I did a quick internet search on 'Adobe Lightroom BSOD' and there were quite a few... Reading some of the posts, they seem to be related to memory or a driver such as the video card driver. On the boot screen where you choose to start Windows 7, there is an option to run diagnostic utility. I would start there. Also, if you can tell us what video driver you have installed. One last thing. Since Lightroom isn't approved for Windows 7, did you install it in compatibility mode?

On this particular PC, Lightroom BSOD began when I installed W7. With Vista, Lightroom occasionally crashed, but it didn't take the computer down with it. I realize that I may not have the same drivers, etc, at this point so I don't know if the problem is related to W7 or is a collateral effect. After installing W7, I didn't reinstall my programs in a particular compatibility mode. With some programs, W7 opened a dialog box at the end of the installation informing me that the program may not have installed correctly because of compatibility... would I like to reinstall correctly? I always said 'yes' but I can't remember if the box came up with Lightroom. The driver for the ATI Radeon X1250 cardis ver. 8.401.0.0 (7/27/2007, from ATI). Will try the boot screendiagnostic utility (but not tonight--lol).

The video driver seems to be old, although the dates may be deceiving. Try updating the video driver from the ATI website. I'd also update your chipset drivers because of the issues that dwolters mentions.- John

aimzzz,You might try the driver from the ATI site, as it is likely to be newer than the Toshiba version.

Update:Got new a graphics card driver on ATI site. Had to manually coerce Device Managerto update the dirver, but I think the Lightroom issue is resolved. I've imported photos twice since installing the new driver with no problem. I tried to break it,zooming in & out of multiple photos during the import, opening otherprograms, etc. So far, so good. Lightroom seems smoother & more stable... I'm pretty sure you've hit on the problem. I'm embarrassedto havecluttered up your W7 forum with a driver problem, but I really appreciate the help :)FYI, the new driver for the ATI Radeon X1250 is version 8.561.0.0 (12/1/2008)It's legacy hardware now, but ATI released one last driver before putting it on the shelf.
