BSOD result as being connected to NAS
So far great experience, apart from 7x BSOD's.These happened when importing library from NAS into iTunes, videos from NAS into MediaCentre, and now when re-arranging pictures on the NAS.At first I thought it was iTunes and MediaCentre, but after the last 2 times, I must realize it is the NAS.I use s 2Tb Maxtor external harddrive connected through the network.Anybody know of known issues??I tried to open the dmp files (Windows/minidump), but it won't let me.Would be great to get this solved :-)Thanks for the thinking!

any antivirus software installed? my machine works without problems when i run it without av-software, but as soon as install av-software (tryed both nis 2k9 and n360 3.0 beta) i get random visits from the BSOD and problems with downloading from the net... i'm using a dlink dns-323 on my net

You do have to do more tests, because it looks like a driver problem. The NAS with network connection does nothing more than just connecting to network. That's all. But that software looks very suspicious...itunes is greek for me and will always be, because I don't like it. Too many bugs too... Try to do it without iT(oons)! That would be perfect!Note to KayFour: NIS? Come on... install a real anti-virus like kaspersk, bitdefender or avast! Norton... oh please... Adelino Araujo

This topic is also elsewhere in the forums. Did the BSOD list tdx.sys ? IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ? If so there's a number of testers with this, I am one of them. I also have a d-link dns-323 NAS, but this is not a common factor among the users. It seems to occur with users having mapped drives and av software that apparently tries to write in memory addresses higher than allowed. I was using avast, others used Kapersky that had this issue. Probably more av software as well gets affected like this. I and other users have been able to get around this using the beta release of ESET Security Suite. Since this was installed the BSOD's have disappered completely. BTW Adelino, I don't care for Norton either, but your last comment is a bit out of line. There's better ways of suggesting alternative products to people.

yes...right on the money thumper! the tdx.sys indicates problem with legacy network drivers as i understand it, used by several different a-v software. uninstalled norton and the BSOD were nowhere to be seen... after a couple of days without a-v software (and no probs...) i have switched to ESET today and that seems to work on my machine!

I use a linksys NAS, no problems so far

I provoke yes. But I was also honest. Norton is not a good anti-virus. For me its more virus than anti-virus. And in real life scenarios, it doesn't goes very well, not in performance nor in detection! That is my experience.I prefer AVAST that works so incredibly well, than Norton. Kaspersky is also good and Bitdefender.Panda is... well, don't use it. I've had quite a few problems with ESET and it is not very trustworthy. TrendMicro just let virus pass through but was good in times. Others... well I don't test every anti-virus, but that is my opinion.Adelino Araujo

Well, I'm still getting BSOD's every time I try to transfer files from my NAS [Linksys] to my Windows 7 machine. I have always had Eset NOD32 installed, so AV software may or may not be causing the problem. Have those of you running Eset installed it under Vista compatibility mode? As far as I can remember I didn't, so a re-install of NOD32 in Vista compatibility mode may solve this for me. I'll try it later. In the meantime I'll just have to use my 2nd computer, running XP SP3, to retrieve and upload files to NAS. At least this is what the beta testing is for and I presume MS/ Eset will be looking into it more depth.

Update: After having re-installed Eset NOD32 [64-bit] in Vista compatibility mode I'm still getting BSOD's and explorer.exe crashes with NAS. On the automatic restart of W7 [64-bit] tdx.sys & IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL are both listed. I'll just have to wait for a fix I suppose.

The version I switched to was the beta of ESET Smart Security 4. There are x86 and x64 versions available for download from their website. Once this was installed their have been zero BSOD's.I know that a beta version av software may not be perfect (heck, even release versions from different companies aren't perfect) but for the purposes of this Windows beta test it seems to be acceptable. It's got a very clean interface and is easy to use. I'd recommend you try it.

I've been having the same issues with a Synology DS107 when just copying data to the UNC path. I'm running avast and will try disabling it to see if that helps any and if it does I'll try ESET and see how that works. Sure wish there was a fix for this, otherwise Win & has been great.
January 29th, 2009 9:09pm

Well, disbling avast didn't help... it only took about 5 minutes to crash again transferring a large file. The BSOD did reference the tdx.sys that I have seen posted elsewhere.Anyone have any suggestions other than wait?

Try installing Antivir, I am using it and have not gotten a BSOD since. I can map to my HP Media Server with no problems at all.

Disabling anti-virus software does not unload their drivers. In order to test you must remove the anti-virus software completely. Avast i sone of the vendors we have seen related to this issue (along with Symantec, McAfee,AVG). We are investigating, there is no workaround now except to not use those AV products, to not connect to Samba shares, or to keep trying AV vendors until you find one that is not usinglegacy network IO operations through our compatibility TDX driver.Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

AntiVir works for me. Finally found an anitvirus product that I can run while connecting to Samba shares without giving me the BSOD!

I don't have a NAS (yet) and haven't seen BSODS ( knock on wood). However windows7 worked great for me for the first 2 weeks and then developed a habit of loosing it's connection to the gateway every few min. I have the AVG-beta for win7 installed. I'm wondering if the cause of my problem might be similar to some of the issues you guys are describing.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/cff8b61e-11ec-47f9-bc4b-72664531beb5

I have been getting the BSOD also when trying to transfer files across the network but only to my Buffalo Terrastation. Transfering files to any of my other systems is fine. Could it have anything to do with the Terrastation being a different operating system. The Terrastation is Unix based, I believe.iamiam bennu

iam,Are you running any anti-virus (AV) software? I have a Maxtor Shared Storage NAS drive (Unix-based) and was getting the BSOD with the TDX.SYS error within 5-10 minutes after I tried to access the drive. I tried several different AV products but each one resulted in the BSOD after connecting to my NAS. I finally tried Avira AntiVir personal and have not experienced the BSOD on either of my Windows 7 computers since I installed it 3 days ago. Finally, I can freely access my Maxtor while also having AV protection.Maybe this will work for you too.

It's my daily machine and works 100%! Each case is different, but you are right about anti-virus. You gotta remove then all, it is not sufficient to disable.I also use avast in XP and Vista and it works perfect. I have also other anti-virus that are hard to get to work, like BitDefender (BD) on Vista Ultimate. But I also have BD in other machines working...AngloNot just on this thread, but generally, the better approach is to debug the problem. Windbg is great and sysinternals tools like process explorer and process monitor are very handy to find this problems. The option you have is to get behind a router and loose the anti-virus. Remove it. You still have the Windows firewall, but you need to see where the problem comes from. You can open the dump files with many programs like windbg. Search for debugging tools for windows. Windbg is great.Adelino Araujo

I apologize, Adelino. I can connect ok to shares on devices running Windows OSusing any anti-virus productcompatible with Windows 7 and do not get BSOD.However, when I connect to my Maxtor external shared drive whichis Linux-based, my system crashes after a few minutes with most of these AV products. However, with AntiVir, I do not get the crashes.

I too, experience the same problem. Trying to access the NAS (QNap T-409Pro) either to transfer downloaded files from my notebook, or go through my photos with Faststone Image Viewer, or playing my music files through MediaMonkey, always results in a BSOD with the same tdi.sys message. Sometimes, it takes a few minutes, other times, it happens almost immediately. I am using Avast as av. Will try the other mentioned av software.

I get this BSOD unless I turn off my 2 network attached Drobo drives...They are network attached via DroboShare...Using AVG Free, but I uninstalled that and still get the BSODs.. after a few minutes...With the Drobos turned off, all is well...greenwing
