BSOD on VPN disconnect
I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. I have a standard windows VPN connection (not using any external software). It connects fine and works perfectly, but almost everytime I disconnect from it I get a BSOD. Anyone else having this error? It normally only occurs after I have been connected to it for more than an hour.

Hello Nicgordon, First of all, remove all unnecessary hardware devices from the computer, try entering Windows safe mode with networking to test whether it is a third-party software/hardware compatibility issue. If so, please download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check the reason for the issue. If the problem persists, please understand that Windows system uses separated user mode and kernel mode memory space, stop errors are always caused by kernel portion components, such as a hardware device, third-party drivers, backup software or anti-virus services (buggy services). The system goes to a blue screen because there is some exceptions happened in the kernel (either the device driver errors or the service errors), and Windows implements this mechanism: When it detects some errors occur in the kernel, it will kill the box in case some more severe damage happens. Then we get a blue screen or the system reboots (it depends on what the system settings are). To troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to debug the crashed system dump. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum. A suggestion would be to contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for regional support phone numbers. I hope the problem will be resolved soon. Thanks! Andy

I have the same problem. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and I have installed a couple of other VPN clients on my computer.

Did anybody find the solution to this? I have the same problem, except on Windows 7 32 bit. Windows 7 client blue screens after disconnecting from a windows pptp vpn connection. The problem has happened on 2 different laptops.

Hi nicgordon, Did you ever resolve this issue (maybe outside of this forum?). I have the same issue on my new Windows 7 (ultimate) 64 bit machine. After a period of time on a standard Microsoft VPN connection it crashes when I disconnect. I am currently disabling each option in the VPN settings one by one to see if this has an effect...

Hi, Unfortunately no. It is still happening to me and I don't really have time to mess around with options trying to fix it. I have about 5 different windows VPNs setup. I also occasionally use ShrewSoft VPN Client and SonicWall Global VPN Client to connect to some other networks. I know that having other VPN clients installed on the machine can sometimes be messy in Windows environments. Basically, every time I disconnect from a Windows VPN connection I just pray that I am not about to be blue screened. It probably happens roughly 1 in 4 times.

Hi nicgordon,I believe I have found the solution to the problem. You need to disable the NetBIOS over TCP/IP.Go to the properties of the VPN.Select the Networking tab.Select 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).Click Properties. In the new dialog box click on the Advanced button. In the new dialog box select the WINS tab.Select 'Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP'.Clik OK on all the dialog boxes and give it a go.. Good luck..

I tried JBud's solution and I haven't had any problems for a couple of weeks now! I think you've hit the nail on the head. Thanks!

Unfortunately I just disconnected from my VPN and got the old blue screen again, so perhaps disabling NetBIOS wasn't the whole solution. My VPN had been connected for probably an hour and I had locked the computer and returned to it after 10 minutes in that time.

I have the same issue. I use Shrew soft AND the window pptp vpn. no issues with shrew soft but crash when disconnecting the windows vpn. Very bad when it happens. I am going over the last updates now to see what changed because I swear it was not happening prior to the last round of windows patches. UPDATE: Hmmm ... May be too soon but I disabled NetBIOS over TCP in the VPN setup and connected and disconnected 4 times so far OK. Can not even imaging what that does so I am not holding my breath!

Can anyone confirm that it solves the issue? Here is info from the changelog for the latest version of Shrew Soft VPN, vpn-client-2.1.6-beta-8: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ r1391 | mgrooms | 2010-05-12 00:35:50 +0000 (Wed, 12 May 2010) | 1 line Modify the vvflt driver to avoid crashes when handling WANLINE UP/DOWN notification messages. We now perform several sanity checks on the message structure and avoid calls to RtlUnicodeStringToAnsiString which should not be called at dispatch level. Many thanks to Joel Wener who reported this issue, provided minidumps and tested several candidate fixes before a correct solution could be found. Bump all driver versions to reflect a new build number. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ r1389 | mgrooms | 2010-05-12 00:16:48 +0000 (Wed, 12 May 2010) | 1 line Modify the libup IPROUTE iface_2_addr member function to pass a gateway address value. I have the same problem with Vista Home Premium. I have BSOD when disconnecting from VPN since I configured the server to use a specific range of ip adresses (2 ip's) on incoming connections, and the client to use one of these ip's as static. This is the only way I have found to mantain always the same server and client ip (my server is under W2008 Web Ed, have not RRAS). I have disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on client's configuration, and no more BSOD from since...
