BOOTMGR is Missing
Hi guys, So I just partitioned an external harddrive and installed Fedora on it. My my main OS is Windows 7, and it was installed on a seperate harddrive. Anyways, now when I try to boot into Windows 7, I get the BOOTMGR is missing error and I am prompted to reboot. The problem is, becuase I purchased the digital download of Windows 7, I do not have the disc to repair this. I did however pay for the 'Anytime Digital Download', but am not sure if that will help in anyways. Any thoughts? I would love to have Windows 7 back.

How did you install Windows 7?I am not familiar with any digital download that is not an ISO DVD or CD image.

when Windows 7 was first released they offered a Digital Download through a Student Discount, actually it was a Digital Download for an upgrade from Windows Vista to 7.

Was this an executable file you downloaded?

Yes it was. It was the Windows Vista > Windows 7 Upgrade file. Ran from Vista's desktop. It was purchased from Microsoft incase you think I downloaded some ISO image, I didnt.

At this point, you are going to need a DVD, CDor something else that you can boot.If you have your Vista install DVD or CDs you could boot it and select "repair my computer". From the command prompt you can get that way, you could use bootsect.exe to replace the MBR and boot sector. You could also copy bootmgr to your Windows 7 drive from the Vista media, or better yet find a copy on the Windows 7 drive if there is one. Use "dir /a /s /b C:\bootmgr" in the command prompt to look for it.If your Fedora installation has an ntfs driver, you may be able tocopy bootmgrfrom there (if you can find a copy of bootmgr). You could also Download a 90-Day Trial of Windows 7 Enterprise. This would require burning the DVD.

Another issue, I do not have the Vista Discs either... I do have access to the original file I used to upgrade from Windows Vista > Windows 7. But its a .exe file... I did pay for the anytime download of the Windows 7 Upgrade, technically, I should be able to download that again and do the install again correct?

Hi, You can try the 90-Day Trial of Windows 7 Enterprise, burn it to a DVD so that we can use it to repair startup. After that, get into Windows 7 and download the EasyBCD to help add Fedora boot entry manually. Meanwhile there is another method to add Windows 7 boot entry in Fedora. You can refer this link although it is for Windows Vista: Fix a dual boot Windows Vista and Linux problem http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-fix-dual-boot-windows-vista-linux.html Hope it helps. I managed to get my hands on a Windows 7 disc last night. I backed up my files, and did a clean install. Now, when I enter my Product Key, I get the 'key doesn't match current SKU' error. Is it true I can fix this by changing the ei.cfg file? Or is there another fix for this?

You didn't need to do a clean install, just select the 'repair your computer' option. Now that you've clean installed a new win7 system, the disc you used is looking for a specific key, and the one you got with your download won't do the trick, you have to use the key that came with the disc you used to install win7. You really ruined your win7 install on this one. You need to follow directions ("If you have your Vista install DVD or CDs you could boot it and select 'repair my computer' ") next time! You're going to have to reinstall Vista, then use your upgrade download exe again.JoelbX's favorite threads | Space | ----- | Email me | 'Gadget' programsHelp me build a new PC

Ya.. I know I screwed up. I'm currently downloading the Windows 7 Enterprise Trial, from there I should be able to use my Key as an upgrade from the trial.. right?

Um, I don't believe the 90-day trial lets you change keys to other than the one coded in the trial, so once again, Vista -> win7....JoelbX's favorite threads | Space | ----- | Email me | 'Gadget' programsHelp me build a new PC

I dont have my vista discs.. I've recently moved, and seem to have lost some things. I've really screwed myself. Worse comes to worse I walk over to my Colleges Store and buy another copy of windows 7. I am trying to avoid that though.

From the Enterprise Trial, I was able to download my Upgrade Application that I had purchased from Microsoft when '7' came out. From here I will just run the upgrade file.
