BKF file corruption near end of backup and Another bkf file gets "access denied" on every file.
i see that xp to windows 7 is supported or possible. what about windows server 2003 to windows 7? I have 2 problems. I have a bkf file backed up with 2003 server that was written but the destination disk probably ran out of disk space during the backup. The file shows 115gb but cannot be recognized by restore.I think the contents are almost complete but this BKF needs to be fixed (probably EOF marker).all i need to to is shorten the file and put file termination marker properly to complete the file.that way i can restore the majority of the file still. better than nothing.i must extract the files backed up in this BKF file.2) next issue. another BKF file is recognized but each file in the restore utility is ignored saying "access denied". it bypasses almost every file int he bkf backup instead of restoring all of the selected files. some files do restore but only a small percentage.any ideas? I appreciate your help.codeblue@hotmail.com - Ray

You may temporary disable the antivirus and check the result again. Does the issue persist? Where did the *.bkp file come from? Is it from a single Windows Server 2003, or a domain client or domain controller Windows Server 2003? If the *.bkp file is from a domain you may encounter issues when restoring to a non-domain Windows 7 system. Also the *.bkp file should not be from a virtual system.Arthur Xie - MSFT

arthur, the bkf file is from a non-domain windows 2003 r2 server i had on my notebook. at the time of the backup it belonged to a home network.i backed up the files to an XP machine on the network from my 2003 machine. i then copied the files from the XP machine to an external USB mass storage hard disk (500gb).i have 2 bkf files. one is corrupt (the backup destination ran out of disk space near the end of the backup) but it wrote the file.the other is the one that when i attempt a restore, it shows 'access denied' and ignores the files inthe backup.any ideas?Ray

Did you restore the backup with the following released tool? Description of the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2 Does the issue occur if you disable anti-virus? If the backup file is corrupt we may not be able to restore. There is no solution for it. Also I noticed that the backup file size is 115GB. What is the content of the backup? Is there any server related data backup such as SQL server exist? If so the restore would not work because the data cannot be restored on a Windows 7 computer.

tHE back up is an image of my Windows 2003 server. not part of a domain or AD setup.the files on the backup show up as titles. the only thing that happened when I did the backupis the host machine (peer to peer) was an XP machine that had (I thought) enough disk space to hold the image. apparently it ran out of space or get way low on space towards the end of the backup operation.what I want to do is properly terminate the file (with some kind of editor) so I can see what is recoverable and restore the files I need to get. Mostly I want to get .txt .doc, .jpg, .gif, .mp3, .wma and various non-OS dependentfiles. I have an incremental backup that I can restore that is part of the same series of 2 backups i performed.I dont understand incremental backups totally, but, i think it just backs up files that changed from a previous backup correct?if so I can restore those files no problem as the incremental backup terminated properly.my question is can I restore all files with the incremental backup or not? otherwise I need to edit the initial .bkf file I created.thanks for your help.Ray

As per your quote, If the backup is corrupt then it can be repaired using some third party BKF repair tool. Try this one. http://www.stellarbkfrepair.com/
