BAD IP / Windows 7 / ONLY with router
My windows 7 desktop will connect to the internet when directly connected to the modem no problem. When I connect to my router (ive tried 2 routers) it works for awhile and then it (my computer) will find a way to give its self a bad IP address (169.254.xx.xx). I have done everything I know to do. Please HELP!

Which cable do you use when you connect the PC directly to the modem, the one that was between the modem and the router, or the one that was between the PC and the router? Sounds like you may have a faulty Ethernet cable.

Okay, we've pretty much eliminated the cable as an issue, and the computer too, since you say it works properly when connected directly to the modem. That leaves only the router(s). You said you've tried two routers - are they the same model (with possibly the same firmware level)?

Both are up to date on firmware.

Different brands, different firmware... Not the problem then. What do the system logs say at the times this happens? Maybe something about not being able to renew the DHCP lease? Also: could you post an IPCONFIG /ALL from while it's working and another from after it fails. One from when it's connected directly to the modem wouldn't hurt either.

Normally it will work, then after a period of working it will give me the yellow caution sign, after it will have an ip of (169.254.xx.xx). I have done a number of things but I cannot repeat results. I am currently trying to update my network cards drivers.

Yes, that's because it's losing it's lease and can't obtain new one. Maybe because of a Windows problem, or a router issue, or it may still be a cable issue... "I am currently trying to update my network cards drivers." Couldn't hurt, and it may solve your problems.

the ipconfig will show a media disconnected, it will give the blue swirl for a long period of time for trying to connect and then ill get stuck with the bad ip. What? IPCONFIG /ALL should just show the current connection status, it shouldn't mess with the connection itself. IPCONFIG /RELEASE will release your connection and set your IP address to 0.0.0.0. IPCONFIG /RENEW will give you your bad IP address, but only if it can't connect with your DHCP server - which in this case should be your router. If an IPCONFIG /ALL is resetting your connection then you've got a real issue in Windows somewhere. I asked you if you have power cycled your cable modem. unplug it and the router and then plug in the modem and then the cable modem. DIdi you do this? Did anything changed? Well, keep us informed on what happens. And for future reference, you don't need to quote every reply and feel free to clip the excess garbage (like in my post) from those you do quote. It makes the threads a bit shorter and easier to follow. Good luck.

No, when i did that it would stall up all together, media disconnected, then when you restart it goes back to the old bad ip.

Hello, First try this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 If that does not do it, unckeck IPV6 in the LAN properties and reboot. See if that fixes the problem. CheersMiguel Fra / Falcon ITS Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase Sharepoint Site

That is for vista, will it work for 7?

It won't hurt to give it a try. You'll have to use the "Let Me Fix It for Myself" instructions though, the "Fix it for me" will probably only work with Vista. I'd still like to see an IPCONFIG /ALL from when it's connected to a router and working; just to check on where it's getting its address and DNS info from. Also tell us what version of Windows 7 you're using (32- or 64-bit) and what Realtek driver version you installed (because I see you have the same network chipset I do and I've had no problems).

I don't see any DNS settings in your config, not that it has anything to do with the DHCP issue. I'm thinking maybe the router(s) isn't/aren't configured properly? My driver version for that card is: 7.17.304.2010 dated March 4, 2010 downloaded from Realtek's website.

Not sure how that would work with 2 separate routers though.

I'm at a loss at the moment. Let me mull it over and see if myself or some other fine person can work out a solution. In the meantime here's a workaround: Click the Start Orb. Right click on Network and select Properties. On the left side of the window click on Change adapter settings. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (DO NOT UNCHECK THE CHECKBOX!) then click on the Properties button. Select Use the following IP address and enter these values: IP address:192.168.2.100 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.2.1 Select Use the following DNS server addresses and enter this value: Prefered DNS server: 192.168.2.1 Leave the Alternate blank. Click OK then OK again and close the Network windows. This sets up a fixed IP for your machine using the Belkin router; the Linksys numbers would be slightly different. As long as you're only using that router and not moving the machine from router to router you should be fine from this point. You can reverse these changes by going back into the IPv4 settings and selecting Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server addresses automatically.

First try this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 I'm willing to bet the problem is related to this. It's just changing a registry key then rebooting. CheersMiguel Fra / Falcon ITS Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase Sharepoint Site

So you have or have had 3 NIC's? One of them is the NIC you are using currently. To find out, open an elevated command prompt and type: net config rdr It will display the active NIC's GUID. CheersMiguel Fra / Falcon ITS Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase Sharepoint Site

Please ping 127.0.0.1 and see if it works. If not, please replace the network cable and see if the issue can be resolved. Also, access go into Safe Mode with Networking (Restart computer, press the F8 key when the boot menu pops up, select [Safe Mode with Networking], and boot up) and check if the issue still occurs. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode with Networking, access Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue. Besides, please test the issue by extending the DHCP lease duration in the router settings to check the result. You can check the router manual or contact the router manufacturer directly to confirm about the settings.
