1. easiest and most effective means to truly disable autorun can be done via this simple autorun registry hack: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYS:DoesNotExist" To use this method, Open Notepad and copy/paste the following into a text file: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYS:DoesNotExist" Save the file as something.reg. (You have to be sure to change the "Save File as Type" to "All Files" before saving, or Windows will try to save it as a .txt even if you typed in .reg. credit goes to this page author: http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ht/autorun.htm Please reply.

LOL..ok now I am really confused first you say use the notepad and then you say not to. so where do I paste the below code or whatever you call it. I saved it to a notepad saved as all files and typed in the :regedit" into the run and a box popped open I then clicked the notepad and sort of dragged it to the box and it said it was added. I rebooted and shut down my external hard drive and turned them back on and the Autoplay came back up again....grrrrr tyvm this is the code I am speaking of in message above REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYS:DoesNotExist"

I took a look at that link and I am not in any way an advanced user and I am totally lost when reading the article anyhow..I did exactly what you said above. I copied and pasted the code (whatever) into a notepad and saved it as Autorun.reg and changed it to all file types. I typed in the "regidit" and clicked ok. the box popped up and I then clicked on the notepad and sort of dragged it and it said it was successfully installed. I shut down my pc and my external. I started up my pc and when that was on I turned on my external and the Autoplay came on again. So I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or its just not working for me. the notepad did save properly I might add cause I can see the little box like image sitting on my desktop and I don't know how to add a screen shot in this forum any other suggestions...I am sorry to be so ignorant, but just don't know why its not working....tyvm

An easier way to disable Autorun for those who don't want to mess with the registry or who don't have gpedit.msc. Is Panda USB Vaccine. http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/usbvaccine/It is an easy one click option. Just install and click Vaccinate computer. It also will vaccinate USB drives. By changing the autorun.inf on the usb drive and lock it so nothing can mess with it. I personally only use the Vaccinate computer option. In the past I used TweekUI combined with editing the registry at:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom set autorun to 0But Panda USB Vaccine does it all with one simple click. and if you ever want to undo your change there is a simple one click option for that too.
