Auto-Logon
HalloThere is a sound for "Windows logon" in System Control | Sounds. This sound plays, when I normally logon in the appropriate screen with username and password. It doesn't, when I use auto-logon. Is this a feature, a bug, or just a wrong setting?ServusManfred

Hi, This may be related to the Sound Scheme settings. I would like to suggest you perform the following steps: 1. Right click on the Volume icon and click Sounds. 2. Change the Sound Scheme to Windows Default. 3. Click OK and restart the computer to check the issue. Whats the result?Arthur Li - MSFT

Hallo ArthurThe result is the same, with Windows Default or several other schemes. The problem is not as simple as to forget to set a <name>.wav in the sound window. The sound is running, when I click "test" there. The sound is running, when I logon with username and password. Only with auto logon it's not working.I forgot to say, that it works in XP and Vista, only in Windows-7 it's missing.ServusManfred

Hi, Is the sound card driver up to date for Windows 7? This time, I would like to suggest you test the issue in Clean Boot. I also would like to suggest you transfer the files from the current user folder and create a new user account to check the issue. Whats the result?Arthur Li - MSFT

Hi, I find the following thread and it seems that you have changed your startup sound. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproui/thread/2981e886-9401-49fc-84b4-466505a0506b If so, it is hard to say what files the third party software changed. I would like to suggest you run System File Checker to repair the system files. If it does not work, you may also perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system. Good luck! Arthur Li - MSFT

Hallo ArthurThis can not be the reason. I had the problem already in august, using Win-7 RC, long before I changed the sound in imageres.dll. The reason, why I changed it, was just because I could not get the logon sound working at auto-logon.I tried several times to get the logon sound working after having installed the final version of windows-7. It works only when using the standard logon procedure, not at auto-logon.So, the change of the startup sound was the only wayI found, to hear a sound at auto-logon.ServusManfred

Hi, This issue is strange. I realize that you also encountered the issue after installing the final version of Windows 7. However, I cannot receive the same issue feedback from others. I would like to confirm have the BIOS updated? I also would like to suggest you disable UAC to check the issue. Disable UAC ========== 1. Click the Start Button, type "User account control" and press Enter. 2. When the User account control settings box appears, move the slider to Never notify. 3. Click OK. Arthur Li - MSFT

Hallo ArthurI read from others different things, one said it's not working, might be a buck, another one told me that this did not work anytime in XP and Vista (he is wrong!) and another one said, it's working. I also thought over BIOS. First I was certain thatthe settings in BIOS were ok, because I have got a triple boot system with XP, Vista and Win-7 on the same machine, which means the same BIOS. But now I've got some doubts, because the shutdown problem I had in the beginning of Win-7 - not in XP and Vista - turned out to be a setting in the BIOS (1394 VIA Bus Hostcontroller).Unfortunately I was not yet able to update the BIOS. The manufacturer (ASUS) would not offer assistance, before the final version of Win-7 was published. Maybe they have got a new version now. I will see.The problem is indepent of UAC, after the new installationUAC was activated, 2 weeks ago a deactivated it, no difference.ServusManfred

Hi, I would like to suggest contact ASUS Support to check if the new BIOS is available. In addition, you may also try to reset the BIOS to default to check if it works. Hallo ArthurWhenthe logon starts, BIOS is finished, same way for normal or auto-logon. That's why I think, the problem should rather be found in one setting, merely in the registry.I found, that in HKLM|Software|Microsoft|WindowsNT|CurrentVersion|Winlogon there is no user-password and no ForceAutoLogon key. Correct? Which settings should be there?I have a P5B-E motherboard. Are thereother users with this motherboard and maybe the same or similar trouble?ServusManfred

I have the same problem and indeed also have the same motherboard type - though I have to admit that I cannot see for the life of me why it would be a motherboard or BIOS issue, because this is something during the late stage of loading Windows, and therefore logically it should be a Windows issue. All the more so as this problem is specific to Win7, and I didn't have the problem in Vista. Incidentally, I note that in the registry key noted by mbklrh I have the values AutoAdminLogon=1, and there is a DefaultPassword value set to the password that I use. Kind regards, Philip Goddard.

Hallo PhilipI think it is both, Motherboard/BIOS and Win7. I also have no problems in XP and Vista.Concerning the registry: There is no difference, when thedefault password ispresent or absent. I had another problem, for the first time in Win7: The computer did not shut down completely. In the forums I learned, that the reason for this new behaviour was a setting inBIOS. 1394 VIA BusHostController was activated. EitherI had to mark "let the system shutdown the computer for energy reasons" in device manager orto deactivate the controller in BIOS. And the problem was solved. This problem occured the first time and only in Win7.That's why I think the problem is connected to the motherboard/BIOS as well as to Win7. There must be one setting, maybe in BIOS or in the registry, which influences that behaviour. This setting is called for the first time in Win7. So what is it?Servusmbklrh
