Audio problems (no sound) in addition to choppy video
Using Dell Inspiron 1525 and I have been having sound problems lately. Performed a system restore a couple of weeks ago and that resolved the issue then, but now that no longer works. Having looked at other threads and I can say that my sound card is "working properly" and driver is running the latest version. When I try "test" in speaker properties an error pops up "failed to play test tone", however I have tested the different properties during dell start-up was able to hear sound from the laptops speakers and audio jacks. Also, if try to watch a youtube video, I get no sound (obviously), and the video is extremely choppy and stutters. I would be happy to provide more specific system specs if needed. I really appreciate any help with this issue.

Have you contacted Dell to see if they can help? Dell is an OEM so you should deal with them, its their gear. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe I also am a true vegan and I am very good with economics and I used to play chess at 2400++

I have ran the dell diagnostics before start up and all the test pass regarding sound and video so I do not have an error code to specifically report to dell. Open to any other suggestions and will still be contacting dell. thanks veg fan

From the download website we found that there is no Windows 7 compatible driver present. Drivers & Downloads for Inspiron 1525 Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. The latest driver should be for Windows Vista. Have you tried it? Since Dell does not indicate that the Windows Vista driver is compatible with Windows 7, if the driver does not help, I suggest you contact Dell and check the compatibility issue. Hey, I have been having this exact issue with my Dell XPS M1530. Restore has been the only thing that fixes the problem, and that is only temporary. Let me know if you have fixed the problem, and what you did, because I have tried a lot of things with no results.

Tbone, looking through other troubleshooting forums across the net, this type of issue seems to occurs often. Not knowing your related issues with sound and when they started occurring but after doing a lot of the updates (drivers, BIOS, Windows) the problem seemed to be related with a windows security update that prevented communication between the drivers and speakers. Depending on the restore date when sound did work or did not work, I went back and started uninstalling windows security updates one by one to see if there was a relation between updates and sound issues. After a couple of days I found that after I uninstalled updates (KB978338 ) and (KB978601 ) the sound and video problems were no longer. Not sure which one exactly, but I have pinpointed to either one of the those two. So just go to your windows update history and there is an option to uninstall updates and remove said updates. In the end that is what ultimately worked for me. Now I can sit back, listen to Edith Piaf and wait for the kick to happen and I do hope this suggestion finds you well.

So I tried uninstalling those two updates you reccomended and it did not work. So, I did the same thing you did (uninstall and reinstall one by one) untill I narrowed it down to two different updates: KB2286198 and KB978886 . My comp is running fine now. If anyone is reading this, try uninstalling these updates, but I am pretty sure you are going to have to do a system restore to a point where everything worked then install the updates one at a time until you pinpoint the problem updates.
