Atheros AR5007G on Windows 7
I have updated the driver (to 8.0.0.238) and it is working but is very, very slow. The Win7 system is up to date (auto updates). On speedtest.net I get a download score of 0.54Mbps but on a similar system on the same network, I get a pretty consistent download speed of 8.90Mbps. The "similar" system is running Ubuntu Linux 10.04 using a TP-link WN851N PCI wireless card. The ping rates and upload speeds are about the same for the 2 systems - the variation, and it is a factor of about 40 is in the download rate. We are in a home wireless network, connected to Sky through their NetGear router, which is downstairs, with a Belkin wireless repeater installed upstairs in the hallway between the 2 rooms where the systems are installed. This is extremely frustrating and if anyone has any ideas where I should look for a solution I would be most grateful. Thx, Jack

As we know, there are many differences between Windows and Ubuntu, such as on the system architecture, the way they work, etc. Even though the hardware is the same; the drivers, features or mechanisms for the wireless NIC and the ways they work with the wireless LAN are different. If this issue didn’t occur previously, a quick solution is to run System Restore and get back to the previous good status. If System Restore is not helpful, please try the following: 1. Try the wired connection and check the speed. 2. If there is a new version of driver for the wireless adapter, please try it; or, try other versions. 3. Boot the system to clean boot environment to check the issue: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

On speedtest.net I get a download score of 0.54Mbps but on a similar system on the same network, I get a pretty consistent download speed of 8.90Mbps. you must be paying your ISP for premium service. 8.9 Mbps is faster than ordinary household DSL. did you try placing the computers side-by-side for comparison? the difference might just be location. sometimes it is helpful to view the Link Speed with Task Manager. here's an example.

Nicholas - thanks for the feedback. I have never used System Restore, but I will read up about it and when I solve this one make sure I store the good status. 1. On a wired connection, the download speed was 8.78. 2a. I have installed a new driver (8.0.0.238 dated 5/10/09) for the Atheros AR5007G which gave me a speed of 4.25 before the steps below. 2b. I have a Sweex LW058 USB wireless adapter installed with a Marvell Libertas wireless driver (1.0.049 dated 22/12/06). The download speeds are very similar for the Atheros and the Sweex. 3. I followed the clean boot instructions as far as possible, but stopping all the non-Microsoft services and all the startup items had no impact. When I selected some of the many, many, many Microsoft services networking stopped altogether so I decided to start de-installing applications. 4. I have now deinstalled all of the software items below, using Ccleaner and restarting after each change : Apple Mobile Me iTunes Hardware helper Universal Document Converter Safari QuickTime Slingplayer Adaware Dropbox Open Office Firefox Picasa Quicken Keepass Kodak AIO Printer Apple application support Apple software update The download speed on the last test I ran was 8.82 - I will try that again shortly and if it stays consistent then I will reinstall the essential applications from the above to see if I can identify the culprit !! This is a very time consuming exercise.

Grits, thanks also for the feedback. I am not paying for premium service. My ISP is Sky in the UK but I live in Glasgow and must be reasonably close to the exchange. I have a Ubuntu laptop and the wireless signal is consistent in my room beside the Ubuntu desktop and in my wife's study beside the Windows desktop. The router is a Netgear DG834 with a Belkin repeater upstairs. There is no difference when the Belkin is switched off !!! Thanks for the tip re Task Manager - I will look at that later and feedback. Cheers Jack

look carefully at anything that looks like bonjour. there have been problems with earlier releases and continued reports of problems between it and windows7, maybe unfairly. i unconditionally remove it if i ever find it in Programs&Features or Services. of course, i do not own an ipod. it is not only apple programs that install it, and it can also appear under some other names. there is much more to be found by googling bonjour and zeroconfig. but i think you have already identified the issue. good work.

I have now reinstalled most of the software that was removed and speed test has stayed up well. I did notice that bonjour was installed with iTunes and then again with the Kodak AIO software. Immediately after deinstalling bonjour (the first time it appeared) the speed dropped to 5.3 Mbps. It is not absolutely conclusive, but I guess bonjour was contributing to the problem. Many thanks for the help on this - my better half seems happier with her system now, though a tad sceptical that the problem has been solved - we will see! Thanks Jack

are you running 64 or 32 bit windows?
