Atheros 5007 not functioning after update crash
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) on HP Pavilion DV7. Today, I applied Windows updates, including an optional update for the Atheros 5007 WiFi adapter. Windows crashed during the update process ("unexpected shutdown"), and WLAN (wireless internet connection) stopped functioning. Only network cable functions now. Windows claims that the update in question was "Successful" (as were the others applied today). I tried to uninstall the drivers for the device (and uninstall the device itself), and uploaded new drivers from the manufacturer's site, booted Windows several times, and re-tried, but the drivers cannot be installed. I get two kinds of error messages: A. "The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" B. "The style of the INF is different that what was requested." Please advise. Do I need a more thorough uninstalling somehow, or do I have to install Windows fully again, and will that help? Here are a few screenshots with the error messages I receive: http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros0.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros1.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros2.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros3.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros4.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros5.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros6.jpg http://www.mlang.name/kuvat/atheros7.jpg Do you need more information to solve this?

Does the HP Recovery Manager allow you to only reinstall drivers and apps and not everything else? Also have you tried system restore back to before you had the problem? Plus I never install updates from Windows updates for video cards or ethernet cards or any other things except the operating system it self. Better to go to the manufactures website to get those.

I don't know how to access "HP Recovery Manager". I only see "HP Support Assistant" and it doesn't list the Atheros device at all. I have Windows system restore disabled and cannot restore the system, or uninstall the update in question.

You can either access recovery manager from your programs list or hitting f11 on boot up.

You can either access recovery manager from your programs list Unfortunately I don't see that program anywhere. Where should it be located? There is only HP Support Assistant available. or hitting f11 on boot up. That does not help either. This computer originally came with Windows Vista, and it has later been replaced with Windows 7. There is no longer a separate model-specific HP recovery partition left on the hard drive because a new installation of W7 from Microsoft (not from HP) does not create it, as far as I understand.

If you didn't delete it the Vista recovery partition should still exist. The only problem is if you use it it will put Vista back on the computer. A problem like this is hard to diagnose over the internet. It's probably something very simple. I'll keep looking around for a solution.

Hi, I suggest you can also try to uninstall the driver and then install the latest one to check the result. More information, you can refer to How do I fix network adapter problems? Hope this helps Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Hi, Please check you have downloaded the correct 32bit/64bit driver for your Windows 7 system. Meanwhile, please also use System File Checker tool to scan the system and then install this driver in Safe Mode to check the result. Hope this helps Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

I have 64-bit Windows and also the drivers are indicated as 64-bit. I ran "sfc /scannow" but it did not detect any problems and the error message "Cannot repair member file" did not appear in the log file. Also, I tried to uninstall the drivers and the device in the safe mode, but the error messages were the same. "The style of the INF is different that what was requested" appeared during the installation attempts. The Windows 7 installation disc could not repair this installation of Windows, either. My computer is in dual boot with Linux and, because of this, the installation software cannot detect any installation of Windows on this computer to be repaired.
