ArtGalry.EXE Information Box on my Desktop every time I boot up
I am running WindowsXP Home. For several weeks now I get an information box on my Desktop screen every time I start the computer. Title in the box is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry.exeThe message goes on - Artgalry .exe can perform several tasks and then goes on to list 3 of themI have to close this box every time to get on with using the PCIs there any way I can stop this box appearing in the first place.I am using MSOffice2010 and I am guessing that Artgalry may be part of that so I am reluctant to delete the file.Previously I was using MSOffice 1997 which is now removed but I do wonder it the problem could be associated with the change from MSOffice97 to MSOffice2010Thanks Al

Hi Bluebellqqqqq,Did you make any software or hardware changes on the computer prior to this issue?Method 1You may check in task manager if there is any Artgalry.exe process. If it’s there, select the process & click on ‘End Process’.Method 2You may configure the computer in clean boot and check if the issue persists. It will start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps to eliminate software conflicts. The following link has steps showing how to perform clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the section ‘Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state’ from the article: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Hope the information helps. Debleena About 3 months ago I installed MSOffice2010 - we had been using MSOffice1997-2003It is my wifes computer so I don't know for sure how long this has been going on but she thinks it may have started then.Thank you for the suggestions you made. I have followed you suggestions and so far this is the result:ArtGalry.exe certainly does show up on the processes list in Task Manager and "end process" does close the unwanted Info box but it comes back on rebooting and is once again in the processes list. What I really want to do is to prevent the Info Box from appearing in the first place. So I tried downloading the Guided Help but althogh I saved the file 310353.exe to the desktop OK when I try to use it to download the help I get the following message "Guided Help cannot be downloaded right now - Please try again later. So I got started on the manual method you on the MS website you sent me. I was able to make the config changes OK but when I click Restart I get a message saying that I should log on to Windows to proceed and I don't know what that means. I believe I am already logged on as a computer administrator and my account name does show up under Users (there is only 1) in the Task Mabager. So currently I am stuck with both Guided Help not being available and with being blocked out on the first restart via the manual method. Can you suggest any way round for either of these?RegardsAl

DebleenaI've looled further into the user account/log on issue and it seems that there are 2 separate accounts on the computer. One is named AdninistratorThe other is named Compaq_Administrator I guess this one was set up by Compaq before they shipped the computer. It does not have "Built in account for Administer account only. Problem is that nowhere on the computer except from the START-RUN command line does this Administrator user account show up as an option so I have no way of logging in as the Administrator.Hope this makes sense Any help would be good.Al

Hi Al,a. You may try to boot into ‘safe mode’ and try to login to the built-in administrator account Compaq_Administrator. It will start Windows XP with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs do not run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed, follow the steps to boot the computer in safe mode:1. Restart the computer.2. Start tapping F8 key.3. You will get advanced boot option window.4. Select the option “Safe mode”.For more information, refer this link:A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XPb. Once you are able to login to Compaq_Administrator account. Open the System Configuration Utility and click on Startup tab.1. Click Start, type ‘msconfig.exe’ in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.2. Click the Startup tab, post back the file location from the same window. Please post back and let us know.RegardsDebleena SMicrosoft Answers Support EngineerVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

DebleenaThanks a lot for your continued interest with this issue. To be honest I have done something which I may regret which seems so far to have fixed the issue without any side effects. I have removed the folder Artgalry from the desktop computer in question and I have saved a copy of the folder on a remote backup drive. So far that has got rid of the irritation every morning when booting up and we have not seen any repercussions.I'm inclined to leave it there unless you think I've done something I will later regret. At the same time my wife and I have concluded that the time has come to schedule a new Windows 7 laptop to replace her XP desktop and get a nice clean start. One of the reasons is that I now feel as a result of this recent issue that Compaq have sold me short in replacing the Administrator account as shipped by MS with their own Compaq_Administrator account that does not have the permissions of the MS one. So thanks again and please get back to me if you think I have made a big mistake. Otherwise as I say I appreciate your help - I've learned quite a bit about the computer in the processAllan Jones
