Applicatons closing overnight
I recently replaced my XP Pro box with Windows 7 Pro. In the past, I've been able to leave several applications running overnight and have them ready and waiting in the AM. This is no longer the case with my Windows 7 Pro. It does not appear to be restarting as a result of a Windows / Microsoft update.I RDP to this PC both intenally and externally, and always "disconnect" vs. "logoff".Using the same domain account as before.W2003k AD (no changes made, logging is with same credentials. Access is 24x7.Suggestions?

Hi,What happened after leaving the applications running overnight? Will the PC go to sleep or hibernation? Will the PC restart or log off or anything else?Go to Power options->Advanced settings->set "Turn off hard disk after" to Never.

All applications closed again. I was thinking along the same lines and made the Power Options change yesterday after my post, setting PC & HD to never sleep, no go. Windows was not restarted overnight. Events include a defrag and a System Restore Point created, nothing else. The apps close every night and defrag is scheduled only on Wed, 1AM so I know it can't be that closing the apps. A System Restore point way created as well, but havn't tried disabling.

I've checked for scheduled tasks, nothing out of the ordinary, or that would force apps to close or restart.

There is another thread here describing the same problem and with some suggestions that could possibly be helpful:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/1d17617a-a222-4292-a6e5-1c522ed67f5f-Noel

If system restore was enabled, it will close application automatically. Try disable system restore as a test.

Magon_67, are you serious? I've never seen any evidence that the system making restore points closes applications, nor would I expect it to... Do you have documentation on this?-Noel

Magon_67: System Restore does not close anything as it creates silent backups automatically. This is false information. If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle. If it solves the issue, click Propose as Answer. Thanks!

Well, because I happened to make a system restore point right before reading this thread. It turned off the machine automatically for no reason.

Ouch, I hate it when that happens. Fortunately I'm not seeing that happen here. That sounds like a bona fide indication something's wrong on your system, Magon. The storage of restore points just doesn't do that normally. What does your System Event Log say in the vicinity of that shutdown?-Noel

Is it possible that the ad user settings in the "sessions" tab controls rdp timeouts on the Win7 box when a joined to a domain? I set my user account to "never"... I'll report back. Note, I also unchecked the "overide user settings" in TS Manager for RDP protocol.DC is Win2003TS is Win2k (but i'm rdp to my desktop, not the TS)Desktop is Win7 Pro 32.My ad account is 24x7 access and domain admin. This one killin me

Did you check your System Event log for the event identified in that other thread I noted above? In other words, are you seeing "User Logoff Notification for Customer Experience Improvement Program"?-Noel

Noel - Yes I reviewed the thread you suggested, and I disabled the customer experience program a few nights ago, sorry I should have noted that... however, that did not solve the issue for my box. Good news is I logged on this AM to find my apps are still up and running!!! Before I get my hopes up too far I'll monitor a couple more days. At this point the only way my apps should be closed is if our corp WSUS and Anti-Virus servers push a restart.

That's good news so far.Was there ever any evidence in your System Event Log why the applications were closed?-Noel

I found that VSS vulume shadow copy service was closing at the same time I would get logged off a game I left running overnight. I'm running tonight with VSS turned off, I'll let you know the results about noon tomorrow, and if it works I'll be spreading the fix to everyone!
