AppData: Local vs Roaming
Could someone explain these folders for me? are they duplicate of each other? when migrating a program from XP. where do I put the data from Application Data so the app will see it? some programs appear to use Local, others Roaming, even though they create folders in both. rather confusing.

I believe it's kind of the difference between public vs private.Maybe there will be a discussion about it in the RTM Help & Support.

Hi Barth2kThe documentation for Windows 7 is not complete or published yet.For this question, the information for Vista isthe samefor Windows 7.You can use the following article to learn the differences between these 2 folder locations. Read about the first half of the article, the rest of the article discusses using roaming profiles in a corporate environment. There are some charts there thatcompare the folder namesin XP and the new names/locations for the same data in Vista.Managing Roaming User Data Deployment GuideBasically, the user data that you move from XP should be placed in the User Name\AppData\Roaming folder. This folder is used for User Profile specific data, while the AppData\Local folder structure is used for Machine Specific data.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Beta Ronnie Vernon MVP
