Another win 2000 workgroup can't get in...
Hi: I have read a bunch of the related threads... I have win 2000 pro SP 4 running on two machines off a simple router and switch for a LAN and of course I-net connect. Just got an HP lap with win 7 home pro.. Created the user ID and passowrd, admin group, added it to both win 2000 machines, running client for MS networks, file and print and TCPIP blah, blah very simple and typical.. Now, here is where it gets fun. From explorer on win 7, I can "see" both Win2k machines. I can connect to the IBM machine and see dir trees, files, services etc... a normal connection. There is no domain just a workgroup called WG1. But, I cannot connect to the other one without getting the much talked about user and password box which will not accept anything in any form... I have compared settings, services running, rights, etc, etc.. From either win2k machine I can get to the win 7 machine, all be it rather slowly reading the first tree level... Something is different, but so far I can't find it. Have not gone into the reg yet, trying to explore all else first... SO, it is possible to connect correctly but I can not isolate the exact circumstances that allow it.... .....Bill

Hello, Are you using blank passwords? If so... In the server machine, give the user a password, then on the client access machine, give the user the same password. When both the user in the server and on the access client have matching credentials, access will be granted. What's happening is that when the server gets credentials that is username/blankpw it's denied due to policy. If you want to keep blank passwords, then change the policy. To do this Go to Start -> Run and type gpedit.msc This will allow you to edit the Group Policies Next Go to -> Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options Double click on Accounts and look for -> Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only. Select disable this option. Miguel Miguel Fra / Falcon IT Services Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase and Support Sharepoint Site

Hi: I wish it was that easy, all users have real passwords... Very frustrating I will tell you, but this is why I stuck with my Win2K operating sys for so long... I was in IT for over 30 years, before windows even existed and it was always the same _hit when you have to make major changes. Win2K SP4 is extremely clean and problem free.. I had hoped to circumvent changing the OS on my legacy computers using the Win7 laptop, but alas all kinds of connection issues.... imagine that... I am also having trouble trying to get my Samsung CLP-510N to connect correctly as well... after all, why should we just limit connection issues to work stations...LOL... .....Bill
