Am I about to loose my Synology DS-106e Server?
I've already contacted Synology support and the Synology forums and they could not or would not help? I think they are waiting for me to buy a new DiskStation - as their response were not overwhelming needless to say. This is my problem since the inception of Windows 7 in my very calm life. I'm duel booting Windows XP, Vista and also Windows 7 - hapily, I'm able to map drives in both Vista and XP using the Synology DiskStation software and windows explorer without any glitches....grrrrrr!!!!! I'm not getting anywhere with Windows 7 mapping a drive??????????? I can see the Diskstation- server in the Windows 7 network folder. Click on the server once and I'm bombed out - sky high!!!!!! I'm using the Synology Assistant to map drives - the latest version. I also have the latest version of firmware on the DS-106e (DSM 2.0-0731 - dated: 13/01/2009. The following is a description of what I've experienced so far: On opening the network folder in Windows 7 I can see the DS-106e is present. When using the Synology Assistant software ver 2.0-0844 - I get an Error code: 1203 - When I attempt going through windows explorer to map a drive, clicking the Browse Button and faced with the dialog of the possible connections (server included) - clicking the server once (name = DiskStation) windows gives me this Error Code: x080070035 - with a message that says "Windows cannot access \\DISKSTATION" "Check the spelling of the name." "Otherwise there might be a problem with your network." "To try to identify and resolve Network problems click Diagnose." I tried diagnose - the response is: "Troubleshooting could not identify the problem." I've renamed the server, all charters lower case no spaces, the norm requirement. As mentioned above - I'm working on a duel boot system - allowing me to boot into Windows XP and Vista where I successfully map drives (using explorer and the Synlology Diskstation Manager) to the DS-106e. This was a desperate move - I've downloaded an updated driver for my network card which works well in Windows 7. (onboard network card driver = Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller for Vista) - I've no problem accessing the internet and logging into the DS-106e interface using a web browser! Curiously though, after I've installed RC 7100 (clean install on a formated the drive) I was immediately able to map a drive(s!!!!) to/from the DS-106e no problem - though after a few reboots (installing other software etc) the trouble of mapping drives started? Just don't get it - I never had this problem with Vista during it's beta and rc era. I do manage to log in to the DS using Synology Diskstation Manager 2.0 (latest version) with web a browser latest version- I manage to create new Shared folders set their access rights etc. From within Windows 7. (try to map a drive, no way!) Last resort - I've backup all data on the DS-106e - wiped the drive and reinstalled the server, but to no avail - still no luck, I can see the server. Windows 7 do not prompt when I turn the server off, nor does it acknowledge/recognize the fact when I turn the server back on - but the server is available as an icon the network folder????!!!!!! Come on all yee experts, surely one of you guys must have a solution to this - I'ts my first time on the MTN network - after a search on synology I've seen 5 synology problems vs Windows 7!

I've discovered the (my) problem, which was with PCTools' ThreatFire application. The moment I uninstalled it, rebooted my computer, I have all normal access to the DS106e server. What a bummer ThreatFire is a fine application! I will put this threat to the PCTools forums.
