Always asking for Domain Credentials
I'm running Windows 7 Betaand I'm connected toa domain mostly using Windows Server 2003 servers.Whenever I access something on a network shareI am repeatedly asked for my network credentials even though I'm already signed in with those credentials. Is there a setting I can enablestop this from happening or is this a compatibility issue with Windows 7?

Try this from Kerry BrownYou could also try setting the credentials needed to access the*share* in the Windows 7 Credential Manager. To access the Credential Manager just start typing it in the Start Search box. You want to Add a Windows credential. In the Resource field enter the UNC to the NAS share e.g. \\NAS_Server_Name\Share_Name Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop ExperienceFrom John WLJohnWL

Thanks,In the credential manager under Windows Credentialsit tells me "Windows credentials have been disabled by your system administrator." I'm logged in as an administrator. Can I enable that anywhere or is that coming from the group policy?

Hey Mike do you have access to other system control panel items? If not then it is coming from Group Policy.JohnWL

Yes, I have access to other system control panel options. The credential manager though lets me manage the Windows Vault and Generic Credentials but says Windows and Certificate-Based are disabled by administrator

Cert. based credentials are MMC SNAP-in based, On your Win2k3srvr MMC snap-ins are disabled from users. If you disable this MMC from users then users are unable to open up MMC on client machines. All of your inherits are coming from the server.JohnWL

Thanks, conviniently I am domain administrator also so I will look for that group policy setting and give that a try. Still, why does Windows 7 need credentials added to the local computer to access domain network resources from a domain account?

Security reasons, it's the reasonof keeping track of accessed shares andhopefully we'll see the device access logs soon.JohnWL

That setting in the group policy is not configured

Hey Mike:Ok! so the setting in AD is not configured right. So lets try to disconnect the share and map it once again using a users credentials and rememeber to check on remember my credentials, and sign on as a different user.JohnWL

Alright, well first of all it's not just mapped drives. I do have a mapped drive with that problem but it's alsoopening any network resouce. For example, run: \\[server]\[folder], it asks me for credentials. Also our sharepoint site asks me for credentials. I chose the option to remember my credentials but it never does. It's basically acting like an XP or Vista machine would ifI wasn't logged in to the domain even though I am.

Maybe a dumb question but is the computer joined to the domain? Is it showing up in the correct OU? Is it using an AD DNS server and no other DNS servers? Gpresult /r may help diagnose if it's group policy.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

That was it. I removed and added the computer to the domain and that did it. Guess I should check the obvious things before I go blaming the new O/S. Thanks both of you for your help.

JohnWL The only NASI have to test with right now didn't work with Vista so I haven't even bothered to try 7. When Vista first came out I tested quite a few NAS devices. The problems almost always came down to the way Samba authenticates. The device was made for XP and possibly Macs. Rarely you could play with different settings in Vista and get it working. More often the fix was a firmware upgrade for the device. Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience
