All driectories have gone to Read Only. I can't update programs
I'm trying to install an update patch for World of Warcraft. Every thing worked fine last week, but after installing the latest Windows updates (28 May 10) all my hard drive directories have gone to Read Only. Trying to change attributes under folder properties does not work. How can I take off read only protection1 person needs an answerI do too

All folders in XP are set to read only, but that means nothing, really, it's just some obscure quirk. It does not affect your ability to move or delete folders, add or delete files, etc. in the folders and the files themselves are not read only, unless you set them that way. If you are having a problem applying the patch, it has nothing to do with the folder read only attribute. It might (depending on the folder the update is trying to access) have something to do with permissions. Does your update require the user to have administrative privileges, perhaps?"Fraggal" <=?utf-8?B?RnJhZ2dhbA==?=> wrote in message news:cde2e3b9-5d7e-46a5-b837-6cbe2d693c23...I'm trying to install an update patch for World of Warcraft. Thanks, I never noticed the read only before. You are right, the launcher error asks for write permission to the directory to patch the game. I've never had that problem before so the next question is, how do I give write permission to that directory? I am loged on as the administrator. I tried but I’m lost using Windows Help. Again thanks for the help.

What folder is it wanting write permissions to? If it is a systems folder it may be trying to replace a Windows system file and Windows file protection won't allow that (but it should be able to write its own files to those folders). To check permissions: If you have XP pro, right click on the folder it wants access to, click properties, security tab, and check out what permissions you have, and what permissions system has (the installer may be running under system rather than your account). If necessary change to full for both (you should be able to do that from an account with admin rights). If you have XP Home, the security tab is not available, but you can get it using the tweak from http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm You may need to restart your PC after following the instructions given there."Fraggal" <=?utf-8?B?RnJhZ2dhbA==?=> wrote in message news:61be29ac-ae8e-458d-8d5c-645e61578fc8...Thanks, I never noticed the read only before.
