All Windows 7 workstations have an error id 50038. DHCP Client will not start. error 5
All my windows 7 workstations gives me an Error 5: Access is Denied. The event logs read and error Id 50038 when I try to start the dhcp client. We have a windows 2003 domain, and i've found a lot of post about adding adding permissions in the registry. I've done those more than once. I know the problem is with my domains group policy, but I cannot find where. I've given rights to local services to run services, made the registry changes and with each step a few more errors desolve, but now i've hit a stump. the 50038 error is followed by a 1004 then a 7036 and a 7023. Diag policy just gives me a 7023. I don't know if the 50038 and 1004 is related to the 7036/23 but it's the next step. Most of the forum question and answers end in 2010 at best so either something got worked out or folks just gave up. I'm still looking for an answer tho.

Can you please check the permission on HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\Parameters HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces make sure that LocalService account has full permission on these to values

Thanks for the response. I'm working from one of the troubled workstations now. I checked both values. Local Service had full permissions on both. Rebooted this morning because I made some changes on the domain server and just wanted to see if I did a system restore to before I joined the domain and rejoined the domain if everything would be ok. It wasn't. After the reboot group policy hit and error 5 on both DHCP client and Diag policy. *edit* I went back to Domain and edited the reg to give local services and services more permission, thinking i'll work backwards. DCHP has now started, but a host of new errors have arisen. Just going to start working through them.

You can try the steps here. The DHCP Client service does not start after you upgrade a Windows 2000 Server-based domain controller to Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895149 The steps are also applied for Windows 7. You need to give permission to the account NETWORK SERVICE.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I got most of the errors killed now i'm down to diag policy not starting and I'm not able to remote desktop into any of the Windows 7 pro machines. I've looked up the event id and it says something about port conflicts, but when I check the ports nothing seems to be using the Remote Desktop port. Also when it comes to the diag policy, trustedinstaller has full rights in the reg. I would add it to my 2003 server gp but trustedinstaller is an unknown user, am I suppose to add the user?

Add the NETWORK SERVICE user for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TcpipPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
