All Office files from Sharepoint are opened read Only

I'm using Win8 RTM on my work PC. We are using Sharepoint 2010 as Project and document site.

All Office documents open as read only, and I can not save the document back in Sharepoint, even if I try Save as and a New document name. I can move documents into SP by using the Explorer.

This worked fine in the consumer preview up until apx the time the RTM was available thru MSD / tecnet.

I then discarded the CP and installed the RTM thinking this would solve my issues, but no, still the same problem. I have tried to use IE9/8/7 comatibility but the problem is the same.

A related problem is posted in the Office 365 forum. Can be found Here.

Any tips to where to look?

A little more info. We have several sites in Our SP environment, one of those is an extranet site. When I Connect to the Extranet over Https documents behave normal, I can open read/wrigth and store the files normally. When I Access the same site from the corporate network over Http: it fails in the same manner as our Intranet sites.

I have gone thru all my settings, but nothing resolved this problem until I deleted my user profile on the PC, this solved the issue. Looks like some permission information was corrupted.

I have to "open" this issue again. It seems like some credentials or permission information are corrupted after some time.

After I deleted my user profile on the PC I could access Sharepoint normally. This continued thru last week, but now (Monday) the problem is back. All files are opened read only, and I can not save files back to Sharepoint even if I use Save as and a new name.

Can I reset the credentials between Office and Sharepoint without deleting my user profile?

Needless to say, deleting my profile creates a lot of hassle..

Yes, it's a pain!! For now I have thrown in the towel, switched back to my Win 7 disc.

We have Active Directory, 2008 R2.

I have a mix of xp, vista, 7 and 8 in my shop, so I have my own fair share of headaches

i suggest using an 8 machine to periodically test scenarios until redmond manages to fix the problems

I also have this issue. When investigating it I found that it probably has to do with the protected mode of IE 10. Despite the fact that it is turned off, there still seems to be some residue of it left. When I tried opening the SharePoint doc-lib in Explorer view, I could edit the document and save it directly back. However, it stopped working :(. When the Explorer window showed up, I got an alert saying that it was leaving protected mode, why I think this might be the reason. It is also a new feature in IE10 why it might very well be the cause for it. I have also tried adding SharePoint site (O365) to Local Intranet Sites and explicitly making sure that "Protected Mode" be switched off. It didn't help.

Any way to permanently switch protected mode off anyone? Perhaps with a registry fix?

Same issue with Read-Only Documents as well. Running Win8 64-bit / Office 13 32-bit and SharePoint 2010. Even creating new documents from the Ribbon won't work.

Repairing the Office installation did do the trick for creating new Documents. Yet after 1 document it fails again.

A little update on this issue.

I reinstalled Win 8 some weeks ago, I also installed Office 2013. Access to Sharepoint files has worked fine until this Monday. Now its back, but in a little different flavor..

Starting IE

The first file I open is opened correctly. The dialogue box is the normal one where you can tick off read only or edit. Document is opened read/wright

I save and close the document, open again and the dialogue box is changed to a IE download dialogue box (Open, Save, Save as) I choose open. The document opens, but in read only.

We now have this behavior on all our test Windows 8 installations. Its really frustrating

We are still running SP 2010.

If I open a fresh IE tab or restart IE it will again open the first file correct, but fails the second time.

First time opening I get this popup:

The second time I get this popup. (And the file is opened read only)

@FrodeAn: Did you end up finding a solution for this problem? I have the same problem at the moment. A quick restart of the browser or new tab, as you stated, "fixes" the problem, however it seems tedious to have to do this every. single. time.

Was there ever a solution to this problem, I am still experiencing it.

July 18th, 2013 7:51am

one idea, get on the server that is hosting the files and change the permissions to the files

if they are all read/only then you may need to change to read/write and maybe create

Took me ages to find the solution to this one and it seems to have been around for a long time through lots of versions of Office, I've suffered with it and Office 2013.

Try the following Steps

  • Quit any Office XP programs that are running.
  • Click Start, and then click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Internet

It is worth noting that the version number above will differ depending on which version of Office you have. Office 201 should be 12.0 and Office 2013 will be 15.0
  • On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

Type OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing, and then press ENTER.

Right-click OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing, and then click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Close any Office apps that were open and tried again. This time the document opened not in read only mode, and you should be able to edit and save the document back to SharePoint

Worked for me: I'm running office2007 with SP2013 installed.

This made sharepoint unable to open office documents.

In registry, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and remove Sharepoint.Opendocument.5

Be carefull, if you repair sharepoint designer, key is back!

At this stage I was able to click on a document in Sharepoint 2013, but the dialog box with open, save, and save as appeared.

To restore the "open document" dialog box with read only and Edit options, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> SharePoint.Opendocuments -> CurVer, and change Sharepoint.OpenDocument.5 by Sharepoint.OpenDocument.4

No need to restart, maybe just clear your IE cache. Normally changes occurs at the time you change the registry.

Hope this helps

does your shop have any restrictions on the share for the credentials i use?

depending on how a shared object's permissions are shown it may be incorrectly configured for your workgroup.
