After installing some software windows 7 pro (32 bit) loses associations with .doc, .pdf, .xls and some other formats
Good day! I'm having a problem with icons after installing some software. Here's situation step by step. 1) My PC had 2 accounts - local (administrator) and domain (with administrator rights) - problem appears at both. 2) I tried to install 2 softwares - a) Google's Sketchup Pro, b) Steam (www.steampowered.com) - problem appeared in both cases. At the same time I have these softwares on my other PCs and it never caused such problems. 3) Right after installation of a) or b) finishes - Desktop blinks and icons for .doc(x), .xls(x), .pdf; icons for running Skype, Word, Excel, Acrobat and some other software appear like unknown file format - software still working, files opening, but thumbs disappear. Same happens for tray thumbs - they appear like unknown while software is running. 4) What happens next? I tried to clear IconCache.db via "cmd": taskkill /im explorer.exe /f cd %userprofile%\appdata\local attrib -h IconCache.db del IconCache.db explorer > reboot Deleting just IconCache.db doesn't help (all network and system screens and antiviruses were turned off before it) - after reboot icons stay distorted. Also tried some variants which didn't help too - with changing depths of colors of icons from 32 to 16 bits, smaller/larger icons, manipulations via personalization and folder's options with viewing layouts instead of previews, changing program associations via default programs etc. - it were described in this branch of forums. 5) I tried next order of steps which worked for fixing things back to normal (and it fixes problem now only in this order): 1. Turning off all antivirus/brandmauer software 2. Uninstall sketchup pro/steam (or possible software which can cause same problem) 3. Running restoration of system from previous points few days back (returning system to the "moment right before installation" doesn't work - only more earlier point work fine) 4. Rebooting PC - this way I receive eveything that was before installation of software, everything "great" except having a software I need. What else I can do? I can suppose that software I try to install changes something in registry, possibly [HKCU] or maybe corrupts mime-type associations, but i don't know what I should search for and what to do after, mime-type association corruption imho is less possible then registry because all software works fine and if I open file's properties I can see program which opens it - only icons corrupted. I tried to install required software under local administrator - problem stays, so it is not domain/local rights problem. Also this note (I don't know can this possibly cause such problems or not) - after installing OS I've changed owner of HDD in options from "Trusted Installer" (which marks owner automatically during OS installation) to my "domain account". Seems that's all. In a hope of getting help! Best regards, Alex.

Hi, Have you tried to right-click the icons and choose Open with? I suggest you to create an new user account to test the result. If everything works fine with another user profile, you can infer that the user profile is corrupt, check the link to know how to fix this issue. Thanks for advice! I solved problem from the other side - decided to reinstall all software which was affected by this case. Tried it on Skype because it was smallest and fastest to reinstall. I've reinstalled Skype under domain profile and after that tried to install required programs - no icons corrupted in this order. I think all the problems may be caused by domain profile, because all software was installed right after installation of OS under local administrator profile.
