Hello fred654321,Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Answers Forum. What other Anti-Virus or Spyware do you have installed on your machine. If you are running OneCare v1.5, OneCare intentionally disables Windows Defender because it can cause system instability to have both running at the same time. So you would not have them both running at the same time.If you are running another Anti-Virus along with Windows Defender, try turning it off and see if you still have the problem. Otherwise, you may have to run a clean boot to determine if a 3rd party application or software is turning Windows Defender off. I would start by removing or uninstalling the HPJ4580 software first since that is when you first saw an issue. A clean boot is intended to disable as many background services and programs as possible. This helps determine which service or program may be causing the problem. Clean Boot Troubleshooting 1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, Or click Continue. 2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup. 3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup items check box. 4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. 5. Click OK. 6. When you are prompted, click Restart. 7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved. If the issue is resolved check which third party program is causing the problem, referring the link given below: For more information about how to perform a clean boot for troubleshooting, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. KB 310353 - How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 Once you have completed the clean boot, you need to get back to a Normal Startup. After you complete your troubleshooting and fix your configuration, return to a normal startup. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. 2. On the General tab, click Normal startup, and then click OK. 3. Click Restart. Please reply back and let us know if this information helped to correct your issue or if you need further assistance.Sincerely, Marilyn Microsoft Answers Support Engineer Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think

I have a similar problem with my HP7100 SFF machine. Windows XP Pro.It started after my ISP loaded Spybot S&D remotely to check my computer for infections (it was clean).Upon a re-start , there was a 1 minute 20 second delay from the Spybot Icon appearing until I received a "Windows Firewall is not turned on" warning. About 2 to 3 seconds after the warning popped up, it disappeared as the Network Icon appeared, completing the boot. Before adding Spybot it was 20 to 30 seconds from the AVG antivirus Icon appearing, until the network icon popped up completing the boot.Icons displayed Right to Left: Time, Video (motherboard), Speaker, AVG Free 8.5(?), Spybot S&D, Network (DSL modem/router).I removed Spybot S&D using the control panel, and tried re-booting. I still got the excessive delay and Firewall warning.I tried re-installing Spybot S&D. No change, so I still have it. (I used it to eradicate the Internet Security 2010 worm I got from a Microsoft Help Page! last month).I emailed Spybot S&D hoping they could help correct the problem. After numerous exchanges, they called it a software interaction, Not OUR Problem.I have lived with this nuisance for several months updating to AVG 9.0 Free.Recently I added Desktop search from the windows optional updates. This increased the time the warning is displayed from 2 or 3 seconds to 35 to 40 seconds! When I clicked on the balloon and tried to turn the firewall on manually, IT WOULD NOT and I was told it could not be turned on for unknown reasons. After the Feb 09 update rendered my computer unable to boot to windows, and repairing THAT problem, I changed my Anti-Virus to Avast. (I posted my problem and recovery method on the XP forum).I STILL have an unexplained delay between the Spybot S&D icon appearing and the Firewall Turned OFF warning appearing for 35-40 seconds, before my network connection icon replaces it.Other information: About 10% of 148GB (binary not decimal) hard drive space used, IE7 NO add-ons or extra toolbars. I will try the clean boot troubleshooting and report, in a day or two, if you respond to this.
