After Update Mouse Won't Work
My computer automatically installed uupdates last night 10/17/08 When I got up this morning, my wireless mouse did not work. I tried new batteries and all USB ports. Then I plugged in another mouse and it too did not work. I found another thread that mentioned update KB938371 causing a similar problem, but that uppdate was done in September for my new laptop with no trouble. In device manager, my USB ports have an exclamation mark. I checked for drivers, but my computer assures me that my updates are installed with the latest software. I do not have the option of rolling back the driver. The USB ports supply power to my speakers and my cooling pad. Also, both of my flash drives worked. Please help. Another hurdle - I am not real sharp where computers are concerned.

Hi, this issue can be caused by USB driver corruption. I suggest you try the following two suggestions and see the result: Suggestion 1: Remove all the USB device drivers =========================== 1. Disconnect all USB devices. 2. Click Start, type CMD in Start Search and press Enter. 3. In the DOS Prompt window, copy and paste the following command and press Enter at the end of each line: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 cd %SystemRoot%\system32 start devmgmt.msc 4. In the opened window, select View and then Show hidden devices. 5. Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" branch, right-click and click Uninstall on everything related to the problematic device or "Unknown Device". 6. Search other branches and delete everything related to problematic device or "Unknown Device". 7. Plug the problematic device to the USB port and install the latest drivers again. 8. Test this issue. If the suggestion 1 cannot resolve the problem, please go to suggestion 2. Suggestion 2: Reinstall USB Controller =========================== First, please disconnect all USB devices. Then, go through the following steps: 1. Click Start. 2. Type devmgmt.msc in Start Search and press Enter. 3. In Device Manger, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". 4. In the expanded menu, move down to the first item, right click and select Uninstall and click OK. 5. Repeat the step 3 to uninstall all items under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

I have this same problem, except that I can't do ANYTHING on my desktop. How in the world am I supposed to "right-click" with a mouse when my mouse doesn't work?? I too have tried 3 different mice, 2 optical (both USB), 1 regular, I am having no luck, AOL IM starts up when the computer starts and I can't get off of that screen. Thank you.

Ann, there's an alternate (keyboard-based) method to launch a command prompt as Admin:<windows> > type cmd > <ctrl>+<shift>+<enter> (by the way, control-shift-enter will launch most any file or program with Admin priveledges.)When the UAC prompt comes up, you can use <tab> to move around the prompt (to highlight the Continue button), and hit <enter> when appropriate. After you've entered the commands that Sean listed, and you've opened Device Manager, you can navigate it (devmgmt) with the arrow keys; <alt> will toggle you back-and-forth between the menu bar and device list.In the device list, <right arrow> expands a listing; <delete> will, of course, delete a device. When you see (when deleting a device) a checkbox asking if you also want to delete the associated drivers (and, yes, you do), <space> will check the box for you (if it doesn't, <tab> your way to the checkbox.)HTH,

I was able to do the suggested steps - thank you for the short-cuts on the keyboard! I restarted, etc, and Windows detected/appeared to install drivers for my printer (USB), USB for my wireless network, and even seemed to detect my mouse - but my mouse still doesn't work! The computer is fine, it connects to the internet and everything (surprising, because sometimes the wireless is only so-so). I don't understand what is wrong.....I tried the USB port and the other port (sorry, don't know what the "original" port for the mouse is called), which was 2 different mice. Is there anything else I can try? Does is matter that I'm running Windows XP? When I check device manager again after restart I have no exclamation marks(I even looked under Mice and other pointing devices, it lists "logitech-compatible Mouse PS/2," which is my mouse, no exclamation points on it). There is, however, 2 question marks under "other devices," which is aPCI SImple Communications Controller and Unsupported Device. I tried to look this up the PCI thing and find out what it is - some have suggested a modem, which my modem is connected to my wireless router. Is that what this is? I really don't know what the "unsupported device" is. Thank you all for your help.

I now have the same problem, all of the sudden, keyboardandmouse wouldn't work, I have a Multimedia wireless keyboard with Optical 2000 so then I tried to use my other Optical 2.0 mouse, nothing will work. I have tried to reload, I have unplugged everything and plugged back in, I have checked my device manager. Everything claims everything is working fine, it passes all tests but won't work so I am back to the old fashioned (tied to a wire thing) HAS ANYONE FOUND A FIX?

VRSTUFF, if your wireless USB keyboard & mouse don't work, but wired USB versions do, then I'd suggest that possibly your wireless kit has died (or, maybe, the batteries have?)Or, did you switch to wired PS/2 hardware?

Not a solution but...friend installed the upgrade from Vista to Win7. Same problem. No mouse. Tried different mice, nothing. He called Microsoft, also we used the same mouse so let him use it to re install the Logictech mouse, showed the software was installed already. Took to "big box" and was told during the install something didn't install correctly and to re install it, told him some of the icons were missing. Also told him for $200.00 they would re install it for him. Has anyone tried re installing Windows 7 again?
