After Sleep, Shut Down, Hybernate Problems

Desktop, System is Windows 8.1 Pro with most of the updates applied running on a ASRock Z97 EXTREME6 Intel Socket 1150 Motherboard with Intel Core i5-4590 processor and 16GB RAM and operating system on a 120GB Mushkin Chronos SATA III Solid State Drive.

When I set the system to Sleep or Hibernate it does that just fine, but then will not wake up. I need to use the computer power or reset button to reboot. If the computer goes into Sleep or Hybernate on its own due to inactivity it will resume OK if not left "too long", i.e. a couple of hours, if overnight same problem of not waking.

This used to work as expected on this machine with 8.1 before one of the updates, but I'm not sure which update. Can be a real problem as some software gets unexpectedly stopped and can need rebuilding if unexpectedly stopped. I am often working and get called away at a moments notice having to leave the computer.

The Shut Down does not shut down, but puts it probably into a hibernate state and sometimes Windows itself complains about this on the necessary reboot. Again didn't used to happen. No, no process is active holding it open.

Have tried turning off fast start-up, no change.

Help, need this working properly again. Notice lots of others with other motherboards and processors are having similar problems on other forums.

Please type the following in an elevated command prompt

powercfg  /A

powercfg  /waketimers

powercfg /sleepstudy

Paste the results in your next post (or if too long upload to one drive and put a link in your next post)

Also run a system file check

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM (if necessary) if you are on win 8 or higher
All instructions are in our Wiki article below...

Thank you very much.

Hi victorjrr, No I haven't solved it. No responses back from Microsoft yet either. It does appear that Microsoft is replacing some driver or something with a new version which doesn't work.

Hi,

Please also check the system power setttings in Control Panel, especially sleep settings in Advanced Power settings.

On the other hand, this can be caused by driver problem indeed, for this problem, you can try to upgrade Motherboard and BIOS driver for test if they had new edition released.

You can also check Event Log if it identify this problem, this might be help us find the futher clue with this problem.

Yes, had checked all the advanced power features trying both alternatives.

I now have it all working as expected. I think what is happening is one of the Microsoft fixes replaces some of the motherboard drivers with Microsoft versions which don't have the proper controls for the motherboard.

I reloaded the motherboard related drivers, but also the all important UEFI boot procedure. This did cause some problems as Windows no longer could load itself, but fixing that I'm now back to a system which boots normally, works with the standby and hibernate as expected.

It would be good to understand what is happening to disrupt a working system to lose this major feature in Windows 8 which when it works correctly is better than it was previously.
