After KB2919355 Installation, system continually reloads desktop

I have read through the posted articles/questions. None of them seem to fit this issue.

This is the second time I have installed KB2919355 update. It is also the second time the result was this problem.  Each time, I had to do a Checkpoint Restore to get the system back to usable state.

System - HP Laptop - (can't get full details, system is doing the Checkpoint Restore)

Quad-core I3 processor, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB HD

Windows 8.1, fully "patched" prior to this update.

I installed KB2919355. It appeared to go well. System restarted after the install and comes to the Login Screen. Once you login, it takes you straight to the desktop, which I don't mind.  However, when the desktop loads, it appears to be okay, but once you try to open anything, the desktop goes into a continual reload cycle, i.e., a loop. It does not reboot.  It just continually reloads the Desktop. Generally, it won't stop this loop until you force a reboot.  I was able to start the Task Manager. The Wireless connection appears to be running and "talking" to the internet. The CPUs are running at about 33 to 43 percent utilization. Disk operations are pretty high.  I suspect these are caused by the continual reload of the Desktop.

I was able to the PC Settings options after several frustrating attempts. CTRL-ALT-DELETE works, which is how I got the Task Manager started.

After the Checkpoint Restore, I cannot find anything that seems to be the cause of this problem.  To be candid, I didn't expect to find anything because of Checkpoint Restore. I tried booting to Safemode. No luck.

You cannot load the Metro "screen" or get to it with the keyboard.

The system was fully "patched" up to KB2919355, prior to the Checkpoint Restore. All the problems start AFTER the KB2919355 install.

Again, this is the second time I have tried to install KB2919355.  I have gotten the same issue after each install. Each time, the Checkpoint Restore was how I resolved the issue.

I am not green at this.  I've been in IT Support, primarily UNIX, Windows Server, and Database support for quite some time.  This one has me stumped.

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts? I will get the system details after the Checkpoint Restore completes.

Bob

The Checkpoint restore just finished.

It's back up and running.

Specifically, yes, I am using some mfg. drivers.  I'll include these shortly, when I update the initial post.

Thx,

Bob

Here's the System info. I'll send along the drivers shortly. Have to weed out the MS drivers.

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

"Continually loads Desktop" sounds like "explorer.exe is crashing and restarting".  So are there any signs in the Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer which would support that hypothesis?  Otherwise, I would run ProcMon, filtering on just Process & Thread to see what is going on.

Also, I'm not going to take the time to research it, but I have a nagging suspicion about having seen VM drivers mentioned in other related threads.  I notice that you seem to have a lot of those.  Perhaps something to uninstall and reinstall in case it gets their hooks set better in the new environment?

Good luck

I appreciate your candor.  I had to install the VMware Reader to use an older program, which has not updated to Win 8/8.1 yet.  They should have the update shortly.

I agree with you. It looked like explorer.exe was crashing and restarting, continuously. It was like a neon sign! I may be able to uninstall the VMware Reader and give it a shot.  I'll have to check with the vendor.

Thanks for your efforts.

I figured this one out.  It took a while, but I worked through the update in stages.

I found a post on TechNet that showed the steps to follow if you wanted/needed to install update 2919355 in steps. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

I downloaded the updates as outlined.  Before I started posting the updates, I removed VMWare from the PC. After a clean boot, I installed the updates in the order specified in 42335 (above). I rebooted after each step.

It was a fairly long installation process, but it worked.

After a final reboot, I checked for more updates.  KB2919355 was there again, only this "one" was 22 MB in size.  I downloaded and applied this update, too.  It went smoothly.

Even though this was a long and drawn out process, I finally got KB2919355 and all the associated updates posted.

Perhaps this will help some who are still fighting this one.

System Model:              HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC

Perhaps this will help some who are still fighting this one.

Especially HP Notebook owners.   <eg>

Recently I had started thinking that perhaps non-Desktop machine owners should wait for their manufacturers to get caught up, even if that meant going back to W8.0

Thanks for sharing the resolution.
