After Exactly 3 Hours in Sleep, Laptop Shutsdown (or Hibernates?)

I have a new Lenovo X250 running Windows 8.1 Pro, attached to a Windows domain.

If I put the laptop in Sleep mode (whether by the button or by the Start menu), then after about 3 hours the laptop appears to shut down. Pressing the laptop power button starts a boot sequence. This happens even if the laptop is plugged into the electricity.

I made sure all power settings were set to default, and the Power Troubleshooter found no problems.

I spoke with Lenovo support. They said an old fingerprint reader might be causing this, so they told me first to try remiving the driver and seeing what happens. Removing the driver did not help.

I ran "powercfg.exe -energy", and got this response:

"Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled
PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer."

How should I proceed?

regards,

mlavie

Open the following settings: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options Select Change plan settings next to the power plan you want to set. Select Change advanced power settings. Select "PCI EXPRESS". Under PCI EXPRESS select "Link State Power Management" and then click OK to save the changes.

Hi S. Sengupta,

Thank you for your response.

If I am not mistaken, you told me to select Link State Power Management and click OK to save the changes, but did not tell me which changes to make.

Am I correct?

TIA,

Lavie

I have more information.

The problem occurs exactly 3 hours (to the exact second) after the laptop was put into Sleep.

The System Event Log contains:

Immediately after clicking on Sleep in the Start Menu:

  • The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Button or Lid

Then, exactly 3 hours later, I find these entries in the System Log:

  • The system time has changed to 2015-06-16T14:04:14.500000000Z from 2015-06-16T11:04:15.344501700Z. Change Reason: System time synchronized with the hardware clock.
  • The start type of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was changed from auto start to demand start.
  • Firmware S3 times. ResumeCount: 4, FullResume: 379, AverageResume: 380
  • The system has returned from a low power state. Sleep Time: 2015-06-16T14:04:15.098739800Z Wake Time: 2015-06-16T14:04:14.706986900Z Wake Source: S4 Doze to Hibernate
  • Windows cannot store Bluetooth authentication codes (link keys) on the local adapter. Bluetooth keyboards might not work in the system BIOS during startup.
  • NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of discovery error. NtpClient will try again in 15 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: The entry is not found. (0x800706E1)
  • The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Hibernate from Sleep

If I understand correctly, something is waking up the laptop from its Slee state, performing some action, and then causing the computer to hybernate, instead of going back to sleep. From the messages, I assume either time synchronization or BITS is guilty.

Any ideas?

Hmmm,

Could this be a "feature"? I looked at the Advanced Settings for Power Management, and under Sleep - there is a setting "Hibernate after", and I see that "180 minutes" is selected.

Is this standard, or is this Lenovo's pre-installed OEM settings?

Hi,

According to event log:

2015-06-16T14:04:14.706986900Z Wake Source: S4 Doze to Hibernate

Your system goes into Hibernate mode to Sleep mode indeed.

To fix this problem, a workaround method you can use is that disable Hibernate Mode.

See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/920730

On the other hand, you can check Task Plan if there is any settings might relate with this problem.
