Afraid to Update windows.

I got home from work to my computer asking me if it could Update Windows 8.1 (We all know how bad it was when we went from 8.0 to 8.1 and im glad they got it fixed BUT!) So I say sure and let it update and restart. BLACK SCREEN WITH MOUSE!! I waited for a half hour and nothing. I then restarted my computer and the same thing happens again. WINDOWS WE ARE SICK OF THIS!! It seems like every update you guys send out we get screwed. Im hanging by a threat with Windows. I try so hard to defend Windows but it gets harder every time there is an Update.

Love a long time dedicated fan.

waited for a half hour and nothing.

That may not be long enough.  I saw one recently on an old TouchSmart that I was dumbfounded by (how long it was taking) but on the TouchSmart I had clues about activity such as harddrive light and fan noise to know that it would not be a good idea to try to interrupt it.  The clues that we are given on the screen are just not good enough (e.g. worm chasing its tail).

But worse, when users do interrupt it using the computer's hard reset button I think that the firmware may tell the OS about this and that could put the processing into an extreme recovery stream.  In contrast, if you just pull the plug (or battery) I suspect there would be less concern by the processes.  E.g. especially in the case of pulling the plug that should be an expected contingency--intermittent power failure.

Good luck

Hi Breaker,

Did you mean you come across problem during the upgrade of Windows 8.1 from Windows 8?

What's the edition of your Windows 8? Did you update from Windows store?

Please follow this guide to perform your upgrade:

Note: after upgrade, please remember to update all your device driver (video card driver especially for you) and install all available Windows updates.

Hello Appreciate your feedback  I would suggest kindly take a back of your Data or move it to Cloud . Then start the upgrade to win 8.1 with a strong internet connection . I did it on my system too . It worked completely fine. Try and run a Windows Update and Run a Group policy update and then try . All the best .

There is a lot of things that can go wrong during the update that may not be because of Microsoft first party software.  Do you have a 3rd party anti virus installed?  Did you update all of your drivers?  was this a system that came with windows 8.0? Also, when you get the black screen with pointer are you able to hit control alt delete and it bring up a menu?
